Annapurna Studios Vyooham Receives Thumping Response

0

The web series Vyooham produced by Supriya Yarlagadda under Annapurna Studios is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Starring Sai Sushanth Reddy and Krishna Chaitanya, the crime thriller received a thumping response.

The series directed by Sashikanth Srivaishnav Peesapati starts on a very interesting note, as the first two episodes superbly set the tone of the investigation, whereas the curiosity builds with twists and turns unfolded as the story progresses. The way the twists are unveiled in the last episodes makes a lot of logic.

Sai Sushanth Reddy and Krishna Chaitanya steal the show with their outstanding performances. The technical standards are extravagant for a series.

Is Amazon Prime killing the Telugu cinema?

0

Telugu cinema industry is facing a huge slump. The collections have drastically reduced to near nil status. The visual spectacles like ‘Sye Raa’ and ‘Saaho’ are bringing the audiences to the theaters but with the advent of digital streaming sites, collections have become zero for small-budgeted movies.

In the last one month, no film has witnessed a decent amount. Of late, theaters and multiplexes in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are witnessing 10 percent collections. “Cinema business has become a weekend business. Collections during weekdays are not even sufficient to pay the electricity bill for the show,” lamented producer and distributor D Suresh Babu in an interview to senior journalist TS Sudhir.

He has given many insights into the cinema business. He said that Amazon Prime and Netflix don’t affect the openings of big star movies but ordinary content will not be survived in the theaters.

OTT Platforms are killing theatrical business says Suresh Babu

Tollywood is going through a tough phase and like never before, the collections in November are quite low. Top producer Suresh Babu interacted with a Youtube channel during which he explained the reasons for the poor show and why theatres are witnessing the lowest numbers. He said that OTT platforms took a toll and a percentage of people stopped rushing to theatres. The economy is also quite poor admits Suresh Babu.

“A good sizeable amount of audience stopped watching films in theatres already due to the OTT platforms like Amazon and Netflix. Cinema is just becoming a weekend and holiday business. We had 3000 screens in united Andhra Pradesh and they have come down to 1750 screens. The youth are now looking for movies and content on OTT platforms. Along with this, the poor economy and bad films made things even poor. I was never been confused about films and with the dull season around, I am confused about the release date of Venky Mama. We have never released a film on Venkatesh’s birthday. We are planning to release Venky Mama on December 13th” said Suresh Babu

Prime effect : Tollywood finally wakes up

Of late, the growing viewership for digital streaming has become a bane for Tollywood as audience are preferring to watch films in Amazon prime, Netflix etc. rather than in theatres. The theatrical business of big ticket films in overseas, in particular, has been adversely affected due to this scourge. Buyers in overseas are reeling under losses as films are not getting long run despite encouraging reviews and word of mouth and the footfalls have considerably come down in recent times. Trade analysts opined that the streaming of films in digital platforms just few weeks after their theatrical release is one of the major reasons for the poor box office performance of Telugu films in overseas.

Now, producers have finally woke up and realised how the digital streaming has been impacting the revenues of films. In what can be a first step towards addressing this vital issue, the producers of upcoming biggies Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ala Vaikunthapurramlo have decided to make sure that these films won’t be available on digital platforms in less than two months. Both these Sankranti films were bagged by leading digital giants for a solid price. Producers have closed the deal with an agreement that they will be made available only after two months. This is a welcome and reassuring move towards giving a boost to the distributors who are worried with the recent slump in overseas market for Telugu films.

Several Tollywood production houses are in the hunt for interesting concepts to lock projects with these digital giants.

With equal scope along with cinema, top actors are now showing interest and are taking hefty pay cheques for web series which is made in seasons. Top actor Mahesh Babu is producing one which is in pre-production stages. Director Maruthi already supervised a couple of projects which are ready to hit the digital platforms. Reliance Jio, Viu, Zee5 and many others are slowly producing content based web series on reasonable budgets. Netflix is in talks to team up with talented directors to produce Indian films too.

Is ‘ Amazon Prime ‘ taken for a ride by Telugu producers ?

Telugu filmmakers these days are tying up with online streaming portals like Amazon Prime well in advance to recoup good chunk of their investment in the form of digital rights. This strategy is proving to be very beneficial for producers as they are making great deal of money prior to film’s release.

As a leading player in digital market, Amazon Prime is shelling out fancy prices to bag the digital rights of the majority of Telugu films. They stream the films online after a stipulated period of time. Unfortunately, they are being taken for a ride by Telugu filmmakers.

Audio companies which get hold of the audio rights of the films are given the freedom to upload the “ Full video songs “ in their YouTube channels As video songs have good prominence and craze in audience, these videos fetch millions of views resulting in good income for these companies. In many cases, these video songs fetch more number of views than the actual count the full movie gets.

So, allowing others to upload video songs is definitely going to impact the revenue of the digital streaming companies. When a noted producer was asked to comment on this practice, he says that Amazon is given only the streaming rights of full movies, but there is no obligation to stop uploading the video songs through the official YouTube channels of production houses or the audio company channels.

It is high time, Amazon Prime realises the importance of video songs and curb this practice to ensure they don’t lose the revenues accrued through them.
