My Home Group backs out of Janaganamana

We have revealed that Puri Jagannadh and the producers of Janaganamana are in talks about the budgets and the further plans after Liger bombed at the box-office. My Home Group is said to have spent Rs 20 crores already on the pre-production work and the first two schedules of the film. After a series of discussions, My Home Group walked out of the project as they felt that the project is not viable financially. They decided to walk out of the project. Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Deverakonda will discuss about the project and it would happen if they find a producer.

Else, Puri will have to do one more project for My Home Group and this will happen at a later date. Puri Jagannadh is in Mumbai and he will return back to Hyderabad this weekend. He will meet the distributors and will refund the losses. Excluding East Godavari, he will have to repay the complete losses in AP region. Warangal Srinu lost a big amount for Nizam and Puri will return back for him. For now, there is no clarity about the next project of Puri Jagannadh.

Sensational director Puri Jagannadh is trolled and criticized like never before in his career. His recent offering Liger is a massive dud and the distributors lost big amounts on the film. Puri and Vijay expected that the film would rake massive numbers in its final run. With the asking stakes high, some of the buyers backed out. Warangal Srinu bought the film for Nizam region and he is staring at huge losses. Some of the regions in Andhra are released on an advance basis. Puri Jagannadh will have to compensate and repay the advances for the buyers.

Dil Raju and NV Prasad already met Puri Jagannadh and informed him about the same. Puri Jagannadh will meet the buyers next week and will refund the lost amount for some of the regions where the film was released on an advance basis. The film’s financiers Shobhan and others too kept hold of some of the regions and released the film on an advance basis. Puri and his team have pocketed close to Rs 60 crores and they will have to shell out the majority of this amount to compensate for the losses of Liger. The film would not be a loss venture for Puri Jagannadh and Charmme but they will have to repay back to the buyers from the profits.

Liger turned out to be a huge embarrassment for Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh. The film is declared as one of the biggest disasters of Indian cinema. American boxing champion Mike Tyson played a crisp role in the film. Puri was badly trolled for misusing Mike Tyson and there are debates about the silly climax. The makers of Liger paid a whopping Rs 25 crores for the cameo appearance of Mike Tyson. This is huge considering his screen presence and the prominence of his role.

Frankly speaking, Mike Tyson’s presence did not bring any extra mileage for the project. There are talks that Vijay Deverakonda and Karan Johar were against the idea of roping in Mike Tyson but Puri Jagannadh convinced them and he paid a whopping Rs 25 crores for Tyson. Liger is a wasted opportunity and the film is declared as a disaster in all the released languages. Puri Jagannadh and Karan Johar bankrolled Liger, a sports drama that had Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Pandey and Ramya Krishna in the lead roles.

Story :

Karimnagar resident Balamani (Ramya Krishna) wants her son Liger ( Vijay ) to become a national champion in Martial arts. The mother-son duo move to Mumbai to pursue their life ambition. Macho man Liger initially concentrates on his career dream but gets distracted when in love with Taniya ( Ananya Panday). The rest of the film deals with the dispute between the lead couple, the World MMA championship in Las Vegas, and finally the Kidnaping event in USA episodes.

Analysis:

Puri Jagan takes off the film in a promising manner, however, the impression fizzles as he delivers very predictable stuff scene after another. Vijay’s characterization stands out in the first half while the terribly written Taniya ( Ananya Panday) – Liger ( Vijay ) love thread plays the spoilsport.

As in a typical sports film template, Liger deals with the ambitious hero. In the training phase, the director downplays him as an underdog. Vijay’s clash with rich counterparts and typical love track episodes are very predictable stuff from Puri Jagan and the team. Given the nationwide buzz, this film got from the beginning, this monotonous script and lackluster direction is unacceptable. Despite predictable narration, the first half is still able to watch. The conflict point between the lead couple is awful; the eventual justification for the conflict is laughable.

We can call out this film’s love track as one of the worst in Puri Jagan’s career. He has the capability of delivering engaging threads, and characterization with ease. That strength of Puri Jagan is amiss in Liger.

Once the hero Liger becomes the national champion, the story goes over the top. Liger gets an invitation to the international championship, Ali helps the cause, and Chunkey Panday sponsors the trip as such scenes are silly. By pre-climax, the film sounds like a comedy film rather than an inspiring sports one. The climax episode with Mike Tyson is a colossal waste of time, money, and energy of all involved persons. Ramya Krishna’s characterization is good in the first half, but the over-the-top antics in the second half unbearable.

A great opportunity to continue the pan-Indian Telugu film’s success streak is missed by Puri Jagan. His typical strengths are no longer visible. Maybe it is high time to get rid of his ‘ Deyyalu ‘ (If exists) and ‘ Focus ‘!

Performances:

Evidently, Vijay Deverakonda has put enormous effort in bodybuilding, to dub as a stammering character, and mainly to act in this tougher role. His fights are excellent, and so is the dance in Coka Song & Akdi Pakdi . Full marks to the hero and the director in this aspect.

Ananya Panday looks Okay but due to the awfully written Taniya role, the audience get irritated every time she appears on the screen. Ronit Roy as MMS coach is good. Ramya character is a mixed bag. Getup Srinu role fails to evoke humor. Chunky Panday , Ali play other characters. Vishu Reddy as Sanju is a good fit.

Dharma Productions & Puri Connects production values are good.

Positives:

– The solid screen presence of Vijay Deverakonda

– Mass appealing dialogues here and there

– Coka , Akdi Pakdi songs

Negatives:

– Terrible love track

– Overaction to Ramyakrishna role

-Highly predictable sports template

– Farcical second half

Verdict:

‘ Liger ‘ is a missed opportunity. Vijay Devarakonda did all the hard work, and his screen presence and performance are very good. Director Puri Jagan has poorly executed the script and failed to put up engaging scenes. Vijay Fans and mass film lovers can try this film!

Puri Jagannadh is the only Tollywood director who reached rock bottom and bounced back to the race several times in his career. Puri Jagannadh’s producers never lost big money as the director is quick to complete the shoot in packed schedules and in a tight budget. Telugu360 has some exclusive information about the film’s budget. Karan Johar came on board as the co-producer of the film but he never invested a penny in the project. Puri Jagannadh pooled out the funds for the film. The budget heaped up slightly because of the pandemic. Two big sets are constructed in Mumbai and most of the film was wrapped in Mumbai. An important portion of the film is canned in USA. The makers closed the non-theatrical rights in advance and they fetched close to Rs 100 crores.

Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Deverakonda are taking minimal remunerations for the film and they would hold a lion’s share in the film’s profits. Karan Johar will release the Hindi theatrical version and he would take the profits from the Hindi version alone. The remunerations, budget, post-production work, interests and the promotional costs are recovered through the non-theatrical rights of Liger and Puri Jagannadh’s team is currently in a safe zone now.

The theatrical deals of Liger are sold for high prices and the team is betting big on the theatrical revenue. If the film fares well, Liger would be a huge profitable film for the team. Puri is spending a bomb on the promotions. Liger is hitting the screens on August 25th across the globe.
