National Awards: Mythri Movie Makers Rare Feat

Today, the winners of the 69th National Film Awards were announced at the National Media Center in New Delhi. Interestingly, Tollywood’s popular production house Mythri Movie Makers bagged three National Awards.

While their Pan India blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise bagged two National Awards, Uppena which was a small-time movie, but ended up as a massive hit, won one award. This is a rare feat because no other production house in Tollywood won 3 awards so far.

Allu Arjun won the Best Actor award for Pushpa, while Devi Sri Prasad who provided a blockbuster album for the movie will receive the Best Music Director award. Coming to Upenna, the movie bagged the award in the best regional Telugu movie category.

It’s a proud moment not just for the production banner, but also for all the Telugu people.

Small film Uppena is a stupendous box-office hit and it collected over Rs 50 crores in its theatrical run. Uppena is directed by a debutant Buchi Babu and Vaisshnav Tej, Krithi Shetty are the lead actors. The film completed its theatrical run and is streaming on Netflix. The film also was screened on Star MAA recently and it delivered a terrific TRP of 18.5 in its first screening. Mythri Movie Makers are the producers of Uppena which was made on a budget of Rs 20 crores.

Tollywood 2021 Quarterly Report

Despite the coronavirus wave, Telugu audience are the first to rush to the theatres. 67 films released in the first three months of the year. Ravi Teja’s Krack is the first blockbuster of the year and the makers, buyers made huge profits. All the other Sankranthi releases fell flat. Krack collected huge revenues when the theatres are operated with 50 percent occupancy. Uppena carried terrific expectations and the film lived up to the expectations. The film created history and it collected Rs 50 crores in its theatrical run which is a record. The film marked the debut of Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty to Telugu cinema.

Then came Jathi Ratnalu in March and the film too is declared as a blockbuster by the audience. The film crossed Rs 40 crores after it was made on a strict budget of Rs 4 crores. Naveen Polishetty, Rahul Ramakrishna and Priyadarshi played the lead roles in Jathi Ratnalu. Vijay’s film Master ended up as a decent hit in Telugu. Anchor Pradeep turned a lead actor with 30 Rojullo Preminchatam Ela recovered the investments though the film received poor response. Prashanth Varma’s Zombie Reddy made decent profits.

Allari Naresh’s Naandhi received critical acclaim and also made good profits. The makers earned handsome profits through the non-theatrical and the remake rights that are sold after the film’s release. None of the other Telugu movies ended up decent. Tollywood witnessed three blockbusters in three months this year and is heading for a crucial April.

Upcoming digital releases of Telugu cinema

It is the success factor and the theatrical run that is deciding the date of the digital release of Telugu films. Telugu digital platform Aha turned out a crucial player and acquired the digital rights of the recently impressive Telugu films Krack and Naandhi. They are playing it safe and are betting on interesting projects instead of shelling out huge bucks for a single film. Aha acquired the digital rights of Gaali Sampath which ended up as a dud at the box-office.

The film will start streaming from March 19th on Aha, just a week after its theatrical release. Zombie Reddy had an impressive theatrical run and the film will stream on Aha from March 26th. Tollywood sensational film Uppena is all set to complete its 50 days run at the box-office and the film streams on Netflix from March 24th. Netflix is yet to announce this officially. The digital deals of some other recent releases are closed and the dates would be announced soon.

Uppena team gearing up for a big bash

Uppena happens to be the biggest hit in Telugu cinema among the small movies. The film scripted history and collected over Rs 50 crores in its theatrical run. The film is reaching 50 days run and is still raking decent revenues in some of the regions of the Telugu states. The makers are planning a grand bash on the evening of the 18th to celebrate the success and the 50 days run in a grand manner. The grand bash will take place in N Convention Centre, Hyderabad.

The entire movie unit, distributors and several celebrities from the industry are invited for the celebrations. Directed by Buchi Babu, Uppena marked the debut of Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles. Devi Sri Prasad is the music director and Mythri Movie Makers are the producers. Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi played the lead antagonist.

Uppena is one small film that raked a theatrical share of over Rs 50 crores. Despite several releases in the coming weeks, Uppena continued to remain strong and had a decent run at the box-office. This week, Jathi Ratnalu emerged as the winner and dominated other releases Sreekaram, Gaali Sampath. Gaali Sampath is a washout and Sreekaram is struggling to get housefull boards during the weekend. Uppena took the advantage of Maha Shivaratri and witnessed decent footfalls.

But that is still an achievement for medium/ small budget films.

February is a dull season for films generally. But with 2020 shattered due to coronavirus and summer 2021 packed with releases, several films released in February. The month started with Zombie Reddy and the film raked decent money at the box-office. Then came Uppena which is named as the biggest hit among the small movies. The film is standing close to Rs 50 crore share worldwide and had a super strong weekend. The film registered record openings all over and Uppena had a dream run at the box-office.

Allari Naresh is back on track after eight complete years. His recent offering Naandhi released along with a bunch of films and emerged as the winner. Along with critical acclaim, Naandhi also made decent money. Zombie Reddy, Uppena, Naandhi ended up as winners of the month. The rest of the films failed to make an impact. Nithiin’s new film Check is heading for a disaster. Vishal’s Chakra and Sumanth’s Kapatadhaari failed to rake decent numbers. On the whole, Tollywood had a decent February and the numbers of films like Uppena are a huge boost for Telugu cinema.

Uppena has continued its very good run in the second week as the film has added 10cr distributor share worldwide. Two weeks worldwide share of the film now stands at 48 Cr. The film is now aiming to cross the 50cr mark which will be a new record for a debutant film. It has now emerged as the highest grosser ever among all the films that had released in February beating Mirchi (47.85 cr distributor share) though that film would be in the 100cr share club if adjusted to inflation. It has also beaten the likes of Fidaa which is another rom-com. The film will face competition from Check this week.

Tollywood is back on track in just 2 Months

Tollywood is the only film industry that reopened completely and announced releases till the end of this year. Even the Bollywood filmmakers and analysts are surprised to see the way Telugu releases performed at the box-office. The calculations have been different completely last year. Several experts predicted that it would take a couple of years for the market to revive completely and there would be a huge crisis for finances because of the coronavirus. Some of them even predicted that the top actors, directors and technicians will slash down their remunerations to save the film industry and producers. There were debates that the exhibition industry which was badly hit will struggle a lot as the theatres are shut for a year.

But things are extremely different in Telugu cinema. The predictions came down from two years to two months. The industry is back within a span of just two months. Films like Krack and Uppena overperformed and proved that the Tollywood audience are ready to watch films in theatres. Small films like 30 Rojullo Preminchatam Ela, Zombie Reddy and Naandhi proved that the Telugu audience will continue to support good films. The actors never slashed down their remunerations and they signed a bunch of projects in a surprise. Most of the actors are ready with a strong lineup for the next two years. The producers and distributors continued to shell out money for stars.

The theatrical rights for almost all the announced films for the year are sold out which is an example that Tollywood is back to track in just two months. Almost 20 films are set to test their luck in summer and if most of them perform well, Tollywood would have a golden era ahead.

Rock-solid Sunday for Uppena

Uppena had an exceptional second Sunday at the Tollywood box-office. The numbers are quite higher than the second Sunday numbers of several blockbusters. The film remained super strong from A to C centres dominating all the recent releases. Going with the numbers, the distribution sector predicts that Uppena will have a decent run for a couple of more weeks. Balayya appreciates Uppena

Balayya is shooting for Boyapati Srinu’s action entertainer currently that will release in summer. He will next work with Mythri Movie Makers and the film will be directed by Gopichand Malineni. Gopichand is currently working on the script and an official announcement would be made soon. The shoot of this mass entertainer starts from May.

Uppena continues to dominate Tollywood box-office

Vaisshnav Tej’s debut film Uppena ruled the Tollywood box-office last week and it had an exceptional first week all over. Four films Allari Naresh’s Naandhi, Sumanth’s Kapatadhaari, Vishal’s Chakra and Pogaru released on Friday. None of the films reported decent openings and all the films except Naandhi received poor to below-average response. In most of the regions across Telugu states, Uppena continued to dominate and witnessed packed houses on its second Friday.

Allari Naresh’s Naandhi received a decent response though the openings have been poor. The film picked up by evening shows and had good second shows across the Telugu states. Naandhi is expected to report good numbers on Saturday and Sunday. Uppena will continue the domination in its second weekend too.

Uppena has an excellent first week with a worldwide distributor share of close to 38 cr. This is the second-highest first-week share for a medium budget film behind F2 which had collected 42.70 Cr share. The film is a Blockbuster and the second film this year after Krack to attain this status. The next target for the film will be entering the 50cr club and it depends on how much growth it will show over the second weekend.
