Tollywood 2023 Half-yearly Report

Half of 2023 is already done and Tollywood rarely had super hits. With not a single big film releasing in summer, the best season was utterly wasted. The exhibitors struggled badly because of the flops which are high in number this year. Veteran actors Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna had a clash for Sankranthi and both the films ended up as money spinners. Waltair Veerayya was a super hit. Dhanush’s Sir raked huge money in Telugu and Tamil languages. Nani’s pan-Indian attempt Dasara made good money in Nizam and it was an average grosser in Andhra Pradesh. The film failed badly in all the other languages.

Dil Raju’s small film Balagam was a surprising hit of this year. Sai Dharam Tej’s Virupaksha is the only hit for Telugu cinema in this summer. The film ended up as the biggest hit in the actor’s career and it marked a perfect comeback for Tej. All the other summer releases fell flat. Among the dubbed films, Bichagadu 2 brought good profits for the buyers.

Films like Amigos, Das Ka Dhamki, Ranga Maarthaanda, Ravanasura, Meter, Shaakuntalam, Agent, Ramabanam, Ugram, Custody, Anni Manchi Sakunamule, Adipurush and others failed to live up the expectations among the Telugu releases this year.

Virupaksha Director gets a Swanky Gift

0

Virupaksha is one of the biggest of Telugu cinema this year. The film emerged as the biggest hit in the career of Sai Dharam Tej and it marked a perfect comeback for the Mega hero. Karthik Varma Dandu made his directorial debut with this film. The film made huge profits for the producers and they gifted him a Mercedes Benz C-Class.

Karthik took his social media page to share his happiness on the occasion and he shared the pictures with the new car. The car was gifted by BVSN Prasad and Sukumar. Karthik Varma Dandu is committed to Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and he is working on the script. His second film will be announced after the lead actor gets finalized.

Tollywood Summer 2023: A Wasted Season

0

Summer and Sankranthi are the best seasons for films in Tollywood. A bunch of big-budget films and those featuring stars will release every year during the holiday season. 2023 is badly wasted as there are no big releases. All the star actors are absent during the season. Some of the promising actors like Ravi Teja, Sai Tej, Naga Chaitanya, Allari Naresh, Gopichand, Akhil and Kiran Abbavaram tested their luck. Except Sai Tej’s Virupaksha, none of the Telugu films failed to register even the minimum openings. Virupaksha ended up as a blockbuster and is the biggest hit in the career of Sai Tej.

Ravi Teja’s Ravanasura, Kiran Abbavaram’s Meter, Samantha’s Shaakuntalam, Akhil’s Agent, Gopichand’s Ramabanam, Allari Naresh’s Ugram, Naga Chaitanya’s Custody, Santosh Shoban’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule and others have been declared as disasters. They performed way below the markets of the actors. Dubbing films Bichagadu 2 and 2018 have been decent and they will end up as profitable films for the buyers. Summer 2023 is completely wasted and the season witnessed one super hit through Virupaksha.

Weekend Box-office: Virupaksha on the Top

0

Akhil Akkineni’s Agent and Mani Ratnam’s PS2 released on Friday with huge expectations. Agent is racing towards one of the biggest debacles of Telugu cinema. The makers will stare at huge losses and the film failed to make any impact over the long weekend. PS2 opened on a dull note and remained low during the weekend. But the film will complete its first week on a comfortable note while Agent will struggle on the weekdays.

Sai Tej’s Virupaksha dominated the Tollywood box-office over the long weekend. The film witnessed packed houses on Sunday and Monday across the Telugu states. Virupaksha has taken the top slot for the last weekend at the Tollywood box-office. Virupaksha marks a perfect comeback for Sai Dharam Tej after the actor suffered a major road accident. Debutant Karthik Dandu directed the film and Samyuktha played the leading lady. Gopichand’s Rama Baanam and Allari Naresh’s Ugram are releasing this Friday.

Virupaksha Review – A Good Mystery Thriller !

Virupaksha Movie Review

Virupaksha Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating 3/5

Story :

Virupaksha film story happens in the year 1979 and in 1991 at Rudravanam. In 1979 The villagers burn a couple alive suspecting they are practicing black magic. The dying couple put a curse that the entire village will die by the next pushkaram. Fast forward to 1991, to counter the series of deaths happening in the village, Ashta Digbhandhanam has been set up. Still, the mysterious deaths continue, and Surya ( Sai Dharam Tej) gets into action to find who is causing the deaths. The rest of the story is what he finds has been revealed in gripping twists

Analysis :

Typically horror genre films follow a template story with some fresh or repeated add-on elements to thrill the audience. In Virupaksha, you will see an afresh and a good amount of story. Though the backdrop is familiar, the story has depth, the script is tightly written and the sound design cinematography, etc. technical elements are good. The young director Karthik Varma Dandu comes up with an expansive story and he was well supported by the technical team. In the First half hero and heroine’s introduction and their love track ( ?) are boring. The villager’s series of deaths and apparent crying make it boring for half an hour so cumulatively. Once the crux elements of the story unfold in first half, around pre-interval, the film shifts to top gear. From then onwards, twists and thrills backed by visual effects will keep the audience engaging. The Tantrik part is gripping. Hero Surya’s ( Sai Dharam Tej) role is passive in the first half and takes center stage only in the second. Sai is adequate in action episodes. Nandini’s ( Samyuktha Menon ) characterization stands out. Samyukhta performed in Nandini’s role very well. Sunil, Rajiv Kanakala, Brahmaji, and Saichand played important roles. Apparently, they are impressive. Suneel characterization is a half-baked one. His partial villainy has no purpose. Kamal Kamaraju plays the key character.

Shamdat Sainudeen’s cinematography sets up the spooky village ambience very well. The lighting work in horror scenes is impressive. Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score is good but the songs are not great. The best part of the technical team is Sound design. The entire team must be appreciated for their work. DTS Mixing by Raja Krishnan is top-class. There is some visual effects work in pre-climax and climax episodes which have been dealt well given the budget.

Positives :

  • Thrill elements work
  • Impressive script and Screenplay
  • Excellent Sound Design
  • Samyuktha Menon characterization
  • Sai Dharam Tej in second half

Negatives:

  • The brief love track in the first half
  • Lag at times in the first half
  • Not for Kids

Verdict: Virupaksha is an impressive spooky film worth watching on BIG SCREEN. This kind of originality in the story is not seen often in Telugu. The script and technical department’s prowess make this film a success. Go and Watch it
