I take higher cut in film profits, says Aamir

Superstar Aamir Khan says he takes a higher cut in films’ profits because he risks his time on projects. But he does so only after the cost of each film is recovered in every aspect.

The actor-producer gave out the information on the inaugural day of the fifth Indian Screenwriters Conference here on Wednesday.

During an interactive session on the topic ‘Writers VS Producers: Can they never be allies?’, Aamir was asked: “There is a worrying trend that now the star has started taking about 80 per cent of the film, not profit but actually as his fees. Even though he is letting his fees go, it ultimately comes to the actor taking away 80 per cent. In 20 per cent how are we going to make a successful film?”

The actor replied: “My first rupee comes to me when the film’s cost is recovered in every aspect, after the producer’s and everybody else’s money is recovered. That’s the model I work with, and certainly, I take a higher cut in the percentage because I am risking my time on that, and I think producers are happy with that too.”

Explaining the model, he shared: “The model that I work on is that, say a film costs Rs 100 crore to make. It consists of everything – cast, crew, production cost, post-production cost and everything comes in that. I don’t take any money in that. I take nothing.

“So, when the film releases, I get zero money. And as it starts earning money, that money goes into P and A (Promotions and Advertising), which is over and above Rs 100 crore. Say P and A is Rs 25 crore, it then goes into recovering that.

“Once P and A is recovered, the producer has recovered his money, and everybody has got their fees…then I go into the percentage of profits. This way, there is no way that the producer can lose any money. And if for some reason, the film has not recovered the money, that it didn’t do well, then I don’t get any money,” he said.

Being part of some of the iconic films like “Dangal”, “PK”, “3 Idiots” and “Lagaan”, Aamir believes that the script plays an important role in the success of a film.

“I think the script is the foundation (of a film) and I make sure that once I love the story and the film is in the making, people who are investing money should not be in loss. I don’t allow the producer to shoulder the responsibility alone,” he said.

He believes that sharing the responsibility of making the film commercially successful also secures his career and builds trust with the producers and financiers of films.

“I think this is the best business model for film and our business because in most of my films, if producer is not losing money, it is but obvious that he will sign me for the next film. That is why I always ensure that if I am signed in a film, there is no loss,” he said.

Citing the example of the 2001 film “Lagaan”, Aamir said: “Since that film was one of the expensive films of that time and was breaking a lot of rules of mainstream Indian cinema and that is why I felt the importance of taking the responsibility.

“That apart, I know when I come on board, producers and financiers do not question me on the subject I chose for a film because they trust me, they have faith in me. That is why I want to ensure the profit.”

My choice of films dictated by my emotional interest: Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan’s filmography boasts of blockbusters like “Lagaan”, “Rang De Basanti” and “Dangal”. The credit, he says, goes to his heart, which he religiously follows while signing on the dotted line.

Since the 1980s, the 52-year-old has been fitting seamlessly between characters like a cab driver, a clown thief or a fun-loving college student.

Asked about his favourite film, Aamir told IANS over phone from Malta: “All the films that I have done are very close to me and I don’t measure my films based on their business.”

But one can’t overlook the massive success of his film “Dangal” that has surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore-mark of box office collections in China – the first Indian film to achieve the feat.

“‘Taare Zameen Par’ is as close to me as ‘Dangal’. So are ‘PK’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Lagaan’. I can’t differentiate between any one of them. All are equally important to me,” he said.

Since “Dangal”, which narrates the story of the real life wrestlers and sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat, broke several records at the box office, is he feeling the pressure to do better?

“No. I don’t feel that kind of pressure. I follow my heart as far as creative decisions go… As to what I am going to do next. It’s never affected by the success of my previous films,” he said.

“My choice of films is dictated by my emotional interest in the story and my creative interest,” added the actor, who is shooting for Vijay Krishna Acharya’s “Thugs of Hindostan” in Malta.

It will bring him together with megastar Amitabh Bachchan on the big screen for the first time.

“I am most excited to work with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time. It is a dream come true. I’ve always been his huge fan,” said Aamir.

He is equally excited about his other project, “Secret Superstar”.

“My next film is ‘Secret Superstar’. It’s about a 14-year-old girl. She is the central character. I love the story. It’s a beautiful story,” he said about the film that traces the journey of an aspiring singer named Insia.

“Will it do the same kind of business like ‘Dangal’? I have no idea. I had no idea that ‘Taare Zameen Par’ would be a huge success either. I did it because of the story or even ‘Dangal’… It’s not a conventional mainstream story. It’s about an old man who has grey hair, daughters and no romance… A story about a family and wrestling.

“It’s not a conventional kind of a film. Who knew it would do this kind of business?” asked the actor.

He is geared up for another biopic, “Salute”, which will be his second biopic after the grand success of “Dangal”.

Aamir has associated with producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala for “Salute”, a biopic on India’s first astronaut Rakesh Sharma.

The project will be jointly produced by Aamir, Screwvala and Kapur under their banners AKP, RSVP and Roy Kapur Films respectively.

Proud of Baahubali says Aamir Khan

With Baahubali: The Conclusion surprising many Bollywood biggies trashing all the existing records, the film became the talk of the country. Many leading filmmakers and actors of Indian cinema stepped out and lauded the film however Bollywood Khans: Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan preferred to stay calm on the film’s exceptional performance.

When asked about the films, Aamir said that it is completely unfair to compare Dangal and Baahubali: The Conclusion as they occupy different spaces. ‘Dangal’ earns over $3 mn in less than two days in China

Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s “Dangal” is on its way to becoming Bollywoods highest-earning film in China, with the movie already grossing over $ 3 million (Rs 21 crore) by the first half of the second day of its release on Saturday.

Aamir is one of the most popular Bollywood actors in China, and his other movies “3 Idiots” and “PK” have done roaring business here before.

“Dangal” — the actor’s latest project — earned Rs 15 crore on its opening day on Friday in China.

By Saturday noon, it earned 23.4 million yuan (over Rs 21 crore), according to trade insiders on the Chinese box office.

So far, “PK” is the only Indian movie to have crossed Rs 100 crore in China and it had done so in 16 days since its release.

It’s a mark which could well be surpassed by “Dangal” — a story of a gritty wrestler in India’s small town who trains his two daughters to become world-class wrestlers.

“Dangal” was released as “Shuai Jiao Baba”, which means “Let’s Wrestle, Dad”.

The producers said it would release in a record-breaking 9,000 screens in China, but as per trade experts, it has released in 7,000 screens out of the country’s nearly 40,000 screens. According to reports, one of the big cinema chains has not shown interest in the movie. Still, it is doing well.

“My boyfriend and I are planning to watch the movie (‘Dangal’). I am hearing great reviews about it,” Gu Xiaoling told IANS.

Other actors in the movie include Sakshi Tanwar, apart from debutantes Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar.

I Discussed Mahabharata With Aamir Khan: Rajamouli

Even though Rajamouli SS has many a times clarified that he would not make Mahabharata immediately after ‘Baahubali’, the speculations haven’t really ended. Now, the ace director seems to added fuel to the fire by spilling beans on discussing Mahabharata project with Aamir Khan.

In a recent interview, Rajamouli has reportedly divulged that he dreams to make Mahabharata on a vast scale and ascertained that it will not happen immediately after Baahubali. He also confessed that he had some time back met Aamir Khan and discussed Mahabharata. “Aamir is also interested in that epic project so we discussed it. But, as I said on numerous occasions, I need more expertise to take up that gigantic project,” Rajamouli added.

So, Rajamouli hinted that Mahabharata will not happen immediately but whenever it happens, it may star Aamir Khan, arguably the biggest star of the country at the moment. If this duo collaborates, sky is the limit for that project’s box office potential.

Some time back, reports emerged in national media that Rajamouli was planning to cast Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal and Aamir Khan in Mahabharata. Made as a trilogy, the epic film was speculated to go on floors towards the end of 2018.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal Review : A film that touches heart !

Dangal Movie Review, Aamirkhan Dangal

Story : Dangal is a biopic based on star wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat’s inspirational life and his daughters’ journey towards International Gold Medal. Hailing from a remote village in Haryana state, Mahavir is natural-born talented wrestler who gives up his career dream due to lack of financial support. He dreams to make his future son an international gold medalist, but he and his wife are blessed with all four girls. Mahavir who is extremely disappointed , gives up his dream until one day when he happen to witness the strength of his two elder daughters when they thrash couple of boys in a street brawl.

Mahavir then reinstates his goal, turns into a ruthless father cum coach to train his daughters Geeta , Babita in wrestling sport. Rest of the story highlights how the two girls overcome the physical hardship and the social struggle in the rural India where it is a taboo pursuing a career in sports, especially in wresting. Finally, they turn their’s father’s dream into a reality winning an International Gold Medal and make everyone proud.

Dangal is a typical sports theme movie, interlaced with an emotional family drama which makes two powerful cinematic emotions work on audience mind in tandem. As you cheer for the two young ladies Geeta Kumari and Babita to overcome every hurdle, you’ll also simultaneously experience subtly woven women equality or women empowerment message. Another best part is Nitesh Tiwari’s authentic setup of rural Haryana – the artwork, the houses, shops and people are so natural. Casting is another major asset of this Dangal movie. An extensive research can be seen in explaining wrestling game, techniques and final episodes.

Performances: Aamir Khan did it again, for the Nth time in his career. What an actor he is…despite him enjoying superstardom, super star in him disappears on screen and we’ll see only real Mahavir Singh in him. His physical transformation, getup as young, middle aged and aged Mahavir deserve endless praise.

Fatima sana shaikh as Geeta is simply adorable. Finding a girl who can portray the innocence of a rural Haryana girl, who can fits a wrestler physique, who can act and last but not least who looks good on screen is a tough task – but Fatima is quite a revelation. Another girl, Sanya Malhotra who played younger of the two girls, Babita, is also adequate. As focus is mainly on Geeta singh phogat, Babita role becomes secondary. Sakshi Tanwar role as Aamir’s wife is limited. The guy who played the role of cousin to these two girls has been used for comedy role. Entire Dangal movie runs on his voice over narration about his uncle Mahavir. The girl who played young Geeta is very impressive with her performance

Background score and cinematography takes Dangal to next level. Especially early mornings and night times’ scenes are captured so naturally by the cinematographer Sethu Sriram. It is very tough job with lighting to recreate such natural ambiance, which he did effectively. Watchout for those frames.

Negatives / Concerns:
Underdog Sports movies follow a typical, predictable structure – for which Dangal is no exception, A typical life-cycle of sports movie is to Introduce the underdog, show the struggle, set the goal, show the training session hardships, show some local victories, If possible add some romance, Finally get audience ready for big game day – add some patriotism to it. In recent years , Hindi movie is banking more and more on this genre, we get a Deja vu feeling – where just characters and the game backdrop changes as screen writing remains same scene to scene. (sports biopic genre is better than “love/action” template movies – that is different debate) In addition, Dangal second half is over dramatized in parts and flat at some other parts. Cinematic liberties too visible to generate emotion – but acceptable.

First half runs entertainingly with subtle satire on Rural India and with thick family emotions. Second half is more focus on girls’ journey to international competitions – where some over dramatization and a lot drag is there. The final wrestling matches are authentic and real.

If you like ‘drama’ more, Dangal movie is a must watch. If you expect a Lagaan (or) Chak dE India kind of sports fervor, you may be bit disappointed. Set your expectations right ! Dangal is neither as mass appealing (or playing to the galleries ) as ‘Sultan’ nor as universal engaging entertainer as ‘Lagaan’.. but is a critically acclaimed good watch with whole family.
