Tollywood First half 2020: Coronavirus plays the spoilsport

Tollywood opened with a bang this year during Sankranthi. Both the biggies Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo raked huge revenues which gave a huge relief for the film industry. After a series of flops, Nithiin’s Bheeshma made decent money at the box-office in February. Tollywood producers had big plans for summer and 20 remarkable films are in the race to test their luck. Then came coronavirus and spoiled the plans of Tollywood.

All the films are now kept on hold and are waiting for release. Coronavirus is said to have shattered the entire plan of Telugu cinema for the year. As per the current update, the theatres may reopen only in December and not before that. The entire summer chart of films will now release for Christmas and Sankranthi. Right from the producers to the exhibitors, everyone suffers huge losses because of the coronavirus.

Most of the Tollywood producers are not ready to release their films on digital platforms and are ready to wait till the coronavirus pandemic comes to an end and normalcy returns.

Producers Guild proposes pay cut for actors and technicians

1

The important meeting of the Producers Guild took place recently and all the active producers who are a part of the Guild made their presence for the meeting. The discussion was majorly focused on how to save the producers in this coronavirus crisis. The Producers Guild decided to implement this for the upcoming movies which are waiting for release to the films that are under shoot and those which will start rolling this year. A couple of more meetings are planned to discuss other issues. Several producers are also keen to slash down the budgets of their upcoming movies. All the directors have been asked to work on the revised budgets.

Vizag to be film hub, Jagan gives green signal to film shootings

Vizag is soon going to be a major film hub. Telugu films which were once made in the Steel City long before the Telugu film industry shifted from Chennai to Hyderabad during in the early 1990s is likely to get back its glorious days. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy gave a green signal to the Telugu film industry to set up studios and outdoor units in the more than 300 acres of land allotted by his father and late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. An assurance to this effect was given by Jagan to the Telugu film industry delegation led by Chiranjeevi Konidela.

The film industry delegation meeting with Jagan comes more than a week after meeting Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao. Seven members of the Telugu film industry, including actors Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, director S S Rajamouli, producers Daggubati Suresh Babu, Dil Raju, C Kalyan and Telugu Film Chamber secretary K L Damodar Prasad, had met Jagan at his Tadepalli camp office.

They asked the CM to let the entertainment industry reopen and gave suggestions on a graded plan. The CM said the resumption of films and TV shootings can begin soon, provided stipulated restrictions are strictly followed. It was also discussed that the shooting must be conducted with minimal crew, including the actors and technicians.

“The CM was very receptive. We have been asked to identify areas where we can restart shooting. The aim of this meeting was to figure out when we can resume shooting at the latest. The CM was very positive in all our plans and proposals. We have given the government our suggestions and they will prepare a plan. I would like to express my gratitude to Chief Minister Jagan garu for considering all our requests including resumption of shooting by easing restrictions,” Chiranjeevi said.

Another key issue the film industry discussed with the Chief Minister was waiver off fixed power charges. Chiranjeevi said Jagan Mohan Reddy has agreed to waive off fixed charges for the film industry. Further, Jagan also permitted the film industry to revive the Nandi Awards function which is likely to be held in Andhra Pradesh on a big scale. The film industry also appealed to the Chief Minister to permit ‘Flexible Ticketing System’ who was favourable to the idea.

KCR green signal to film shootings

1

In a big relief to the Telugu film industry, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday gave a green signal to the film industry to resume film and TV shootings . However, the Telangana government has not permitted opening of cinema halls and multiplexes in view of the surge in the corona cases in the state.

While giving his stamp of approval to the film industry, the Chief Minister, it is learnt, had permitted only limited resumption of film shootings and pre-production activities by adhering to social distancing norms. Accordingly, the Chief Minister had signed on the file pertaining to the film and TV shootings. With KCR’s approval, Chiranjeevi who had to suspend the shooting of his upcoming film Acharya directed by Koratala Siva can resume his work. Similarly, the shooting of SS Rajamouli’s film RRR has been put on hold due to a coronavirus outbreak. The production of actor Pawan Kalyan’s Vakeel Saab, the official remake of Pink, was also postponed. The shooting of all these movies and many more can be resumed.

The film industry biggies including Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Rajamouli, Allu Arvind, Trivikram Srinivas, Dil Raju, Suresh Babu, Koratla Shiva, N Shankar among others had recently met the Chief Minister. In the meeting, the Telugu film industry bigwigs told Rao lakhs of workers and technicians were affected as shooting activities were stopped due to the complete lockdown. Work in film and TV industries in the state came to halt on March 23 in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. All cinema halls were shut down, the shootings were cancelled until further instructions from the government.

Tollywood filmmakers worried about new guidelines

1

There are several meetings going on about resuming the shoots of Telugu films. While some of them are ready for shoots, most of the directors, producers and actors are not ready to take a risk and land in unwanted troubles in this coronavirus season. Considering the statistics, the spread of coronavirus is high and shooting in these conditions following the guidelines is undoubtedly a huge risk for everyone. One unexpected incident will turn a threat for the entire industry says producer Suresh Babu.

Maintaining social distancing on the sets is not an easy task. For a romantic entertainer, the hero and the heroine will have to shoot closer and they cannot miss the intimacy. Though some of the filmmakers say that they are ready to shoot with just 50 crew members, it is impossible practically. Even a small film needs 70 crew members and shooting with the new guidelines and taking a risk is not the need of the hour. Though the government is ready to grant permissions, most of the filmmakers are not ready to resume the shoots considering the guidelines and the current situations.

As per the ongoing debates and updates, the shoots of Telugu films will not resume before August.

Telangana government’s U-Turn for Film Shoots

1

Megastar Chiranjeevi along with a bunch of celebrities met Telangana Cinematography Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav after which they met Telangana Chief Minister KCR. The government was positive and asked Telugu cinema bigwigs to come up with the guidelines that should be followed on the sets to grant permissions. But things changed eventually and the number of cases in and around Hyderabad are increasing on a regular basis.

As per the latest update, the Telangana government is now reconsidering their decision and they are not completely positive for the film shoots. Some of the producers and actors too are not ready to join the sets immediately. Tollywood producers will sure feel the pressure as the budgets would go up because of the special guidelines. Sanitizers, PPE sets, face masks, thermal scanners and other equipment would cost them a bomb and they should be maintained on the sets on a regular basis.

After collecting the feedback from several celebrities, the government decided to grant permission for shoots in August and not before that.

No Tollywood shootings in Hyderabad?

0

Hyderabad is the most comfortable place for film shoots as the city has enough number of studios and shooting floors. There is huge amount of open space available across the outskirts. Though the Telangana government is ready to grant permissions for film shoots, it is not that easy to shoot in Hyderabad. The number of coronavirus cases have been increasing at a rapid speed in Telangana and most of the new cases are from Hyderabad. There are several containment zones in the city.

It is not easy to conduct outdoor shoots in and around Hyderabad. The Telangana government may impose restrictions for shooting in the city and it may ask not to shoot in the city because of the increasing number of cases. Even the top actors are not recommending shoots in Hyderabad for some time. The shoot locations should be away from red zones. The crew members should be kept safe and healthy. Tollywood filmmakers have enough challenges to face in the coming days because of coronavirus.

Balakrishna digs more on resuming the shoots

6

Nandamuri Balakrishna made some sensational comments on Tollywood celebrities who are working hard to resume the shoots of Telugu films. Balayya said that he wasn’t invited to the meetings. During an interview with a YouTube channel, Balayya took a dig once again. He said “We are the highest tax paid industry in the country. That is the reason why the government is ready to resume the shoots in this quick time. It is practically not possible to resume the shoots in these situations”.

“Some of them said that the Telangana government is quite favorable for the industry. Our celebrities could not get at least 2 acres of land for free from the government. Chiranjeevi and others went to Dallas to collect the funds for MAA. They said it was Rs 5 crores and no one is aware of how much was collected. Not a single building was constructed. I am not interested to involve in this. Hypocrisy is more in our industry. I have no differences with KCR. Politics and movies are different” said Balakrishna.

Responding to Naga Babu’s comments, Balakrishna said “I did not respond to Naga Babu’s comments, I am not interested”.

Tollywood needs a bunch of films ready by August

1

The Tollywood celebrities met the government of Telangana and discussed resuming the film shoots. After they got a positive nod from the government, the guidelines to be followed are being worked out. A set of films that are nearing completion will be granted permission to shoot on a priority basis. The post-production works of Telugu films too will resume from June 1st. The theatres are expected to reopen from August first week as per the update.

V, Nishabdham, Red, Orey Bujjiga and 30 Rojullo Preminchatam Ela are the only films that are ready with the first copy. Several films are in the final stages of shoot. If the theatres are opened in August, there should be a minimum number of 20 films (with known actors or directors) to screen the films for the month to get decent footfalls in Telugu states. As there would not be a chance for a film to be screened in more number of screens, more number of films need to get ready if the theatres are reopened. Telugu producers are now rushing to complete the shoots and announce the release dates soon after they get a clarity on the reopening of theatres.

Tollywood to resume post-production works

0

The lockdown in the country is expected to come to an end by May 31st. The film shoots may not resume immediately and the theatres will not reopen at the earliest. But the Telangana government is quite positive when it comes to post-production works. As per the latest news, several production houses are in plans to resume the post-production work from June 1st. Films like Vakeel Saab, Sreekaram, Solo Brathuke So Better, Most Eligible Bachelor, Alludu Adhurs, are in last leg of shoots.

All these films are expected to start their post-production works starting from June 1st. Films like V, Aranya, Nishabdham, Red and Uppena already completed all the post-production formalities. AP Government grants permissions for film shoots

1

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, all the film shoots are put on hold and the theatres are shut. The Telangana government made it clear that the film shoots will not resume in the next three months. But the government of Andhra Pradesh stepped out with a surprise allowing to resume all the shoots of feature films and television serials. A caution deposit has to be paid for the government and all the concerned departments are informed by the government of Andhra Pradesh. AP is the first state to grant permission for film shoots.

Shocking guidelines for Filmshoots post Lockdown

1

The Centre is slowly relaxing all the fields which are left shut from the past couple of months. The film industry is badly impacted and several producers are eagerly waiting to start the shoots soon after the lockdown once the government grants the permissions. The Centre is in plans to issue strict guidelines for the film shoots. The movie unit should come up with a certificate that the entire movie unit (cast and crew members) are not infected with coronavirus.

If anyone from the cast or crew passes away due to the coronavirus, the makers of the film should pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakhs for the family of the deceased. This will be a huge burden for the producers if any unfortunate incident happens on the sets of the films. The same guidelines would be applicable to small films and television shoots. If the government comes up with such guidelines, most of the filmmakers would wait for the coronavirus scare to be reduced instead of heading for shoots.

Why is direct OTT release not ideal for big films?

0

After the country is shattered with coronavirus outbreak, India headed for a lockdown. There are several speculations that the big-budget films are heading for a direct OTT release instead of a theatrical release. There are reports that OTT giants offered hefty prices for the OTT deals but most of the figures are fake. OTT platforms operate on a subscription basis and not on revenue sharing basis. Hence shelling out huge money for the digital rights would not leave them in huge profits and these deals are not ideal for them.

When it comes to small films, the deals would be decent as they can acquire the rights for decent prices. Right from Bollywood to Tollywood, there are several speculations and the filmmakers had to trash them as rumors. As of now, Nishabdham is the only film from Telugu cinema which is in talks for digital release among decent budget films. The Centre is in plans to announce relief for theatres but Tollywood producers are not ready to release their films in this crisis and incur losses.

Tollywood theatres to follow a new set of rules post lockdown

1

The theatres across the country are completely shut from the past few months. Though the country is slowly returning back to normal, the patrons will not return to theatres to watch films anytime soon. The Centre is in plans to reopen the shopping malls and movie theatres from June or July. Here are the new set of rules that would be followed by the exhibitors across Telugu states to prevent the spread of coronavirus:

Only 50% of the seats would be sold and social distancing will be maintained after the theatre owners will sell the alternate seats. Several changes are being planned for online ticket sales. The printed tickets will be banned for some time and the audience will be allowed through QR codes which would be sent to their mobiles. These would be scanned during the entry.

Only three shows would be screened for some time. The last show would be completed before 7 PM. There would be a considerable gap of 45 minutes for every show. All the seats would be sanitized after the completion of every show. The theatre owners are in plans to close the alternate seats using ribbons to prevent the patrons from sitting beside each other.

Special arrangements are being made near refreshment stalls and toilets. Social distancing should be strictly maintained in these places.

The discussion about the ticket prices too in on and they would be finalized soon.

Tollywood to avoid outdoor shoots

1

With the coronavirus scare, the shoots of Telugu films are halted. The exact dates when the shoots would get resumed is unknown for the filmmakers. The producers are left in huge financial stress because of the unexpected break. Some of the actors are keen to resume the shoots only after the vaccine for coronavirus arrives in the market. Though some of the producers are ok with the idea, some of them are strongly opposing the move as it takes 8-10 months more for the vaccine to be available.

Hence various producers are suggesting indoor shoots with a limited crew so that the shoots can be completed. The producers are ready to follow the guidelines of the government. The outdoor shoots will be restricted for some time as it needs enough crew and excessive burdens like traveling and more manpower. Special security measures too should be taken to prevent outsiders in these cases. Telugu Film Producers Council and Producers Guild will discuss all these factors and will come up with a single stand. A bunch of producers would meet the governments of Telugu states to allow shoots soon.

The theatre openings are interconnected with the shootings as they need enough number of prominent films to be ready for release before the theatres across Telugu states start screening back movies.

Coronavirus Lockdown: The new genre of Telugu Cinema

0

The coronavirus scare brought life to a standstill and the Tollywood filmmakers, actors and directors are restricted to their homes. The writers and directors are working on several scripts utilizing this break. Telugu360 exclusively learned that a bunch of filmmakers are penning stories on coronavirus. The mankind hasn’t witnessed such a crisis in the past and taking coronavirus as the base, several writers are penning stories adding horror, comedy and other ingredients.

Talented director Maruthi spoke to Telugu360 exclusively saying “Tollywood audience will watch a bunch of films on coronavirus in the coming months. It’s easy to pen a story on coronavirus but mixing it with the right ingredients and the humor matters for any film. The emotional content should appeal to the audience. The audience will also watch those films which release first. Earlier several films are made on demonetization but none of them impressed the audience” said Maruthi.

Bollywood filmmakers Raj and DK already started a micro-series on lockdown which is under shoot. Tollywood audience will soon witness films on coronavirus soon. Wait for the big announcements.

Telugu films with Rs 2,000 cr production value stuck due to lockdown

1

Coronavirus has come as a blockbuster blow for the Telugu film industry, the second biggest in India after Bollywood, as films valued Rs 2,000 crore either ready to be released or in production have been stuck for over a month.

With no chances of an early end to the crisis, the industry is not only staring at massive losses but also fear loss of over 70,000 jobs in production, distribution and exhibition departments.

Like many other industries and every film industry in the world, the coronavirus outbreak and the resultant lockdown brought everything to a standstill in Tollywood, as the Telugu film industry is popularly referred to.

According to well-known producer Daggubati Suresh, 15 films which were ready for release and another 70 films which were under various stages of production are stuck.

“Production varies from a film like RRR which is Rs 400 crore plus film to many films which are in the hundred crore bracket and a lot of films in the Rs 20-30 crore bracket. There are many with a budget of Rs 3-5 crore. There is quite a big money stalled. May be in production alone projects worth Rs 2,000 crore are stalled,” Suresh told IANS.

The big banner movies stuck include ‘RRR’ of S.S. Rajamouli of ‘Baahubali’ fame. Starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR in the lead roles, it is expected to be another magnum opus from Rajamouli.

Superstar Chiranjeevi’s ‘Acharya’ is another big banner movie stuck due to lockdown. Movies of leading stars like Balakrishna, Allu Arjun, Vankatesh and Ravi Teja have gone behind schedule. Most of them are Rs 30-40 crore movies.

Nani and Vijay Devarkonda’s movies were ready for release. Ram Pothineni-starrer ‘Red’ was also scheduled for April release.

The lockdown has brought all the production, distribution and exhibition activities of Suresh Productions to a grinding halt. The company had four films under production ‘Narappa’, ‘Virata Parvam’, ‘Crush’ and ‘Krishna and his Leela’ and it had planned three other movies.

“It’s not just films under production which are hit. My all three studios and 250-300 screens all are shut. The losses are huge,” said Suresh.

He pointed out that 1,800 cinema theatres are the worst affected by the lockdown.

Second largest film industry in the country after Hindi, Tollywood makes 250-275 movies every year. About 175 films are made in Telugu while about 100 films are dubbed from other languages. The budget varies from Rs 1-2 crore to Rs 200 crore, pointed out the ace producer.

“Tollywood’s most successful film ‘Baahubali’ proved to be the biggest hit in India. Now ‘RRR’ will be the biggest film. It is basically a Telugu film being dubbed into other languages. Somewhere we are making the biggest films of the industry,” said Suresh.

Every year 25-30 Hindi movies are made with Rs 100 crore budget while the number of Tollywood movies in this bracket will be around 12. Tamil industry ranks third in this category with 3-4 films.

Suresh foresees plenty of joblessness in the industry even after it gets back to work. “The filmmakers will try to save cost and try to remove the unnecessary flab. There will be a lot of digital interface and there will be a lot of more work from home attitude.”

Many low level non-technical jobs and even mid-level managerial jobs are likely to go. Things may change even for outdoor shootings with less number of people handling the work. Huge joblessness is also feared in distribution and exhibition with cinema theatres resorting to lay-offs.

The producer does not expect things returning to normal in the industry till the vaccine or drug is made for COVID-19. “I don’t think too much is happening. It could be a low of 6 months to high of 12-15 months.”

“All depends on when the vaccine and medicine will come. That’s when we are fully done. If the process of developing vaccine or medicine is slow then some small shootings and some post-production work can happen. The films may have to be released through OTT (over the top) or some other platform.”

Creative Producer Venkat Sidda Reddy believes that Tollywood will make a comeback. “The film industry has seen so many ups and downs and I strongly feel that there will be a comeback. The looming uncertainties of shooting schedules, theater occupancy and the competition with the OTT platforms are definitely going to be major challenges but every challenge is also an opportunity,” Reddy told IANS.

“With this sudden downward trend, the budgets will become smaller. With smaller budgets, shoot schedules have to be very well planned and we will have to find ways to work with smaller crews and shorter shooting schedules. This is a good opportunity to use technology and device processes that are lacking in the industry,” said Reddy.

He believes that the low budget films with genre specific films will have worldwide reach on OTT platforms. There will be a lot of opportunities in the OTT platform for newer ideas.

“With theaters closed and everyone binging on OTT, the producers, distributors and exhibitors now know the real impact of OTT on films. So there will be a huge paradigm shift and as a supporter of Indie cinema, these challenging times are going to open doors for more opportunities,” he added.

Tollywood producers coming on to a common stand

0

With the coronavirus lockdown, the shoots came to a stop and the theatres are closed. Right from the producers to the distributors and exhibitors, everyone is in crisis. It is clear that after the lockdown gets lifted, several films that completed shoots will head for release. Several top producers recently interacted through a video conference and took crucial calls. It is heard that all the producers will come on to a common stand and meet once the lockdown gets lifted.

All those films that completed shoot will be given priority for release. The films that are in the final stages of shoots will be the second bunch heading for release. All the actors, actresses and character artists will be allocating the dates for the projects that they have already signed. They would be asked not to sign any new projects until they complete their current commitments. All the producers are working on the challenges that they would face in the coming months. To prevent further problems, Tollywood producers will discuss and resolve their issues internally instead of heading for clashes that would create further problems.

Tough days ahead for Tollywood actresses

1

The film industry is badly impacted due to the coronavirus. All the shoots are kept on hold and the new release dates would be announced soon after the lockdown gets lifted. The heroines will have a tough time ahead because of the coronavirus outbreak. Along with films, they are earning huge money through endorsements and openings of shopping malls. Small actresses are earning decently through modeling. All these came to a halt due to coronavirus.

The film shoots are expected to resume in June or July. The pressure will be mounted on the actresses who already signed two to three films. All the filmmakers will mount pressure to join the sets immediately after the lockdown gets lifted. In this process, the top actresses would be losing a film or two from their signed projects and several young, new actresses would get a chance. All the actresses will have to complete the project which is already under shoot on top priority.

The actresses are in plans not to lose the big projects and they may walk out of small projects if needed. The actresses are now left confused because of the current situation. This may also spoil the relations with actors and filmmakers as most of the actresses cannot accommodate their dates to all the signed projects at the same time.
