Tollywood actors not ready to join shoots anytime soon

0

The producers of Telugu cinema are eagerly waiting for the lockdown to get lifted so that they could reinstate the shoots that are stalled due to coronavirus. Most of the lead actors are not ready to join the sets in these tensed situations. Coronavirus is still worrying as there are enough number of cases. The Centre may lift the lockdown by May 3rd but permissions for the film shoots may not be given soon as there would be hundreds of people working on the sets.

Several producers are in talks to start the shoots to complete the shoot at the earliest and get their projects ready for release. The Producers Council along with the Producers Guild will meet after the lockdown to finalize the things. Some of the actors already informed their producers that they would not join the sets for the next three months till things calm down and situations settle well. This would add a huge amount of stress for the producers financially. We have to wait and see how things shape up after the lockdown gets lifted.

Tollywood top producers looking towards web series

0

Web series and OTT platforms are the most discussed across the Tollywood circles currently. With the coronavirus lockdown, the audience are spending hours watching digital content. The viewership across the country has been exceptional over these years for OTT platforms. Several top Telugu producers are now keen on producing web series in the coming months. Baahubali producers Arka Media Works are focused and are busy with several web projects. Krish who penned scripts for web series is now producing several projects on First Frame Entertainments. He also inked deals with Allu Aravind’s Aha to co-produce web series.

Sharat Marar recently produced ‘Asalem Jarigindi’. Ashwini Dutt’s daughters are producing a couple of projects on Swapna Cinema. They inked deals with Amazon recently. Manchu Vishnu produced Chadarangam on 24 Frames Factory and is in plans to produce some more web series in the coming months. Several other Tollywood producers like BVSN Prasad and DVV Danayya are in plans to venture into digital space soon by producing web series in the coming days.

With web content in huge demand and no release troubles, several producers are keen on web-based films and web series. OTT giants like Amazon, Netflix, Zee5 and Hotstar are acquiring these web series for huge prices as they need a lot of content.

Tollywood puzzled between theatrical and OTT Release

0

The big announcement about the lockdown extension for coronavirus came today and as everyone expected the lockdown is now extended. The country will remain shut till May 3rd and the situations post May 3rd are currently unknown. Even after the completion of lockdown, it is sure that the audience will not rush to theatres and watch films. Entertainment turns out to be the last option in this crisis. Taking this as an advantage, several OTT giants are ready with fancy offers to release several films on OTT platforms before they have a theatrical release.

Several producers are facing the heat from the financiers and are thinking to release their films on digital streaming platforms to get out of the crisis. Some of them are puzzled between the theatrical release and digital release for their films as there is no clarity on when the theatres would open up after the crisis. The daily wage workers are badly hit as they are left with no work from the past few weeks. With the lockdown extended, some of the Tollywood producers would vote for OTT release and they would go ahead soon.

Tollywood in plans to slash down the ticket prices?

0

Tollywood is completely shattered with the outbreak of coronavirus. All the shoots are stalled and the theatres are shut. Telugu film industry would incur a loss of hundreds of crores because of this shock. Even after the lockdown gets lifted, it would take some time for things to turn normal. Theatres will remain shut till things calm down. There is a huge financial crunch all over and the audience will take their time to settle down and watch films in theatres.

Tollywood bigwigs are in plans to slash down the ticket prices to make films affordable in this crisis. A top producer spoke to Telugu360 expressing his view. He said that “It would be quite good if the ticket prices are slashed down by 40% for some time. OTT platforms turned out to be the major source of entertainment for the audience in this crisis. It is quite tough to divert the audience towards films and hence the price cut for the upcoming releases would be an option. To witness decent footfalls and occupancy in this crisis, the price cut for tickets is the best option”.

All the Tollywood producers should come on to the common stand to implement this and support cinema in this tough time.

Discussion: Will Telugu heroes come to rescue producers?

1

Tollywood is left in lockdown with the coronavirus outbreak and the Telugu film producers are going to lose big amounts because of the delay. Several film releases are pushed and some of the shoots are put on hold. With overseas circles completely locked down, the upcoming releases will miss the numbers that come from overseas markets. On the whole, the producers are going to lose a big amount in many ways.

A producer who is not interested to be named said that he has to pay a hefty amount of money as interest alone and his upcoming films will incur a huge loss because of the outbreak. Several producers are not sure if they can release their films soon after this tragedy as there is a huge financial crunch. The ongoing discussion is that if the actors are ready to slash down their remuneration or return back a part of the paid remuneration for the producers.

Some of the producers are in plans to initiate talks with the actors about this. A clarity on this discussion will come once the crisis of coronavirus comes to an end.

Coronavirus scare: Tollywood to be shut till April

0

The fear of coronavirus is gripping each corner of the globe and the impact is going high every single day. Tollywood is completely shut till the end of this month and as per the early estimates, Tollywood will continue to be shut till the end of April. With the number of cases going high, it would not be possible in a week or two to prevent the virus. The whole country is left scared as there is no vaccination for the deadly virus. It is just sitting at home to fight against coronavirus.

Several bigwigs of Tollywood met recently and discussed about the impact and future plans. All the producers will meet once again to discuss about the shoots, updated release dates once the impact of coronavirus comes down. As of now, April remains shut and several films will miss their announced release dates. All the theatres and movie plexes across the country are shut until the end of March.

Coronavirus to disrupt summer releases

0

A bunch of films planned their releases during this summer. To avoid box-office clash, several films announced their release dates well in advance. April and May are jam-packed with releases. Nani’s V is the first film to open summer race and with the scare of coronavirus, some of the films that arrive during early summer are re-thinking about the release date of their films.

Films like Aranya, Uppena and Nishabdham are slated for April first week release and their fate would be decided on the severity of coronavirus in the coming weeks. As of now, the deadly virus is having a huge impact on the collections from the past one week. If the films get postponed, there would be a box-office clash among some movies and confusion among the other summer releases.

Producers Guild battling for a Cause

0

For the first time in Tollywood, there was a huge debate and battle for Sankranthi winner among the biggies Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Both the films claimed themselves to be the biggest hits and released numbers through posters. This even triggered fan wars and industry bigwigs weren’t happy with the happenings. The Producers Guild met several times after these incidents and they decided to announce the official numbers of the upcoming films in the coming days.

K Damodara Prasad said that the gross numbers of future films will be released by the Producers Guild which can be considered as the official numbers of the film. He said that the Guild will verify the numbers after which they would be announced. This is to create transparency among the collections and to prevent controversies, fan wars. This decision is opposed by several filmmakers as some of them argue that the announcement by Guild makes way for further controversies.

Some of the filmmakers who are not in the Guild argue that the Producers Guild has no right to announce the official collections of their films and it is the producer who should make official announcements.

Tollywood heroes are Bonding: Wakeup Fans

0

Gone are the days where heroes hesitated or kept mum to appreciate the works of other actors. With social media taking a major stage, all the actors have been active to interact with their fans and post good things about the films of other actors. Ram Charan and NTR surprised everyone after they signed RRR which is sure the biggest multi-starrer of the year. They are well bonded outside after the shoot which is sure a great sign.

Tarak is one actor who is winning the hearts constantly with his bonding. His tweet appreciating Bunny for his film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is shaking the internet. NTR essaying Allu Arjun as ‘Baava’ is the sweetest thing on the internet today. Mahesh Babu is always a front runner to appreciate films immediately after watching. He takes twitter to appreciate the actors and technicians for their work.

But things are completely different with fans. The fan wars across facebook and twitter are turning murkier every day. Despite of the actors requesting their fans to stay away from fan wars, they are not bothered about the words of their favorite actors. It’s high time for them to wake up and realize about the healthy bonding between the actors and appreciate other films instead of exchanging words that are leading to wars on social media.

Digital Rights : A bone of contention b/w producers and exhibitors

The emergence of OTT platforms( streaming sites like Amazon Prime and Netflix) is turning out to be a big bane for Telugu films as there is a steady decline in revenues earned through ticket windows. In recent times, Tollywood producers are inclined towards selling the digital rights to these streaming giants as they are fetching solid prices. The moment audience knew that a streaming giant has bagged the rights, they are waiting for films to release in these platforms rather than watching them on big screen. This is one of the reasons why films are not getting long run in theatres and also there is considerable decline in collections after first week.

Digital rights issue is now a hot topic in industry circles. Recently there are several debates between producers and exhibitors on consequences of digital rights. In one such recent meeting, a leading producer in Tollywood reacted harshly on exhibitors. When an exhibitor has raised the issue and explained how revenues are spiralling down after one week of film’s release due digital streaming, the producer bluntly replied that they have the right to sell off their films to streaming channels because they can recoup their investment. He also bitterly commented that producers have no obligation to ensure that films get long run in theatres.

It looks like digital streaming is a double edged sword for Tollywood for its equal share of advantages and disadvantages. While the streaming rights are fetching huge amounts for the producers and helping them recover their investment, exhibitors are suffering badly due to the downturn of market in all major areas including overseas as audience are not turning up at theatres as expected. There is a contrasting opinion on this issue among producers and exhibitors. In a recent media interaction, a top producer expressed deep concern over the current stagnation of Telugu films market. But, he sold the digital rights of his upcoming film to a leading streaming site.

Tollywood expecting to end with a Bang

0

After the completion of Dasara, Tollywood witnessed a major slump and the collections reached all-time low. Tollywood audience stopped coming to theatres due to various reasons. None of the recent releases too failed to generate positive buzz except Karthi’s Khaidi that released for Diwali. The season of films is expected to start with Venky Mama which is slated for December 13th release. Venkatesh and Naga Chaitanya are the lead actors in this family entertainer. The makers are expecting that the film will open with a bang.

Soon after this, Balakrishna’s Ruler and Sai Dharam Tej’s Prati Roju Pandaage are hitting the screens on December 20th. Raj Tarun’s Iddari Lokam Okate and Mythri Movie Makers’ Mathu Vadalaraa are releasing on December 25th. Apart from these, Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3 and Karthik’s Donga are slated for Christmas release. Tollywood filmmakers and buyers are quite confident that the audience will line up to theatres and the upcoming releases will end up as money-spinners. If this happens, Tollywood will end up with a bang for 2019.

Big Move: Tollywood top actors into Production

The market of Telugu cinema expanded like never before. Language is no more a barrier and several Bollywood makers are investing a bomb on the remake rights if the film has enough interesting stuff. With the producers raking massive profits through the non-theatrical rights, several Tollywood top actors are venturing into production. Prabhas already enjoys a lion’s share in UV Creations which is floated by his friends Vamshi, Vicky and Pramod. Ram Charan too launched Konidela Production Company and is producing Megastar’s films on the banner. In the future, Ram Charan’s Konidela Production Company will co-produce his films too and will share the profits of his projects.

NTR is in plans to work with NTR Arts (Kalyanram’s banner) in the future along with other production houses. NTR Arts will be active for all the future projects of Tarak. Mahesh is enjoying the profits of his films from the past few years. His home banner GMB Entertainment is already producing a bunch of concept-based flicks and Mahesh will take over an amount of the profits through GMB Entertainment of his upcoming movies. Allu Arjun is the latest one to join the race and he already hinted that Geetha Arts would be present in all his future projects. Allu Arjun is quite open to reveal that he would take the profits along with his paycheque for his upcoming projects.

All the top actors of Telugu cinema will enjoy the profits of their upcoming projects. Though some of the producers are hesitant, they are left with no option except to send the profits for the top actors.

Prime effect : Tollywood finally wakes up

Of late, the growing viewership for digital streaming has become a bane for Tollywood as audience are preferring to watch films in Amazon prime, Netflix etc. rather than in theatres. The theatrical business of big ticket films in overseas, in particular, has been adversely affected due to this scourge. Buyers in overseas are reeling under losses as films are not getting long run despite encouraging reviews and word of mouth and the footfalls have considerably come down in recent times. Trade analysts opined that the streaming of films in digital platforms just few weeks after their theatrical release is one of the major reasons for the poor box office performance of Telugu films in overseas.

Now, producers have finally woke up and realised how the digital streaming has been impacting the revenues of films. In what can be a first step towards addressing this vital issue, the producers of upcoming biggies Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ala Vaikunthapurramlo have decided to make sure that these films won’t be available on digital platforms in less than two months. Both these Sankranti films were bagged by leading digital giants for a solid price. Producers have closed the deal with an agreement that they will be made available only after two months. This is a welcome and reassuring move towards giving a boost to the distributors who are worried with the recent slump in overseas market for Telugu films.

Tollywood is now worried about Christmas clash

Superstar Mahesh Babu and Stylish Star Allu Arjun decided to clash for Sankranthi and announced their respective films for January 12th 2020 release which left Tollywood in huge shock. Now, Christmas too is heading for a huge clash and we have some exclusive updates about the releases during the season. Nandamuri Balakrishna is busy with his next film directed by KS Ravikumar. The film releases on December 20th. Dil Raju pinned many hopes on 96 remake which featured Sharwanand and Samantha in the lead role.

The film too is in the Christmas race as of now and will release during the holiday season. Sai Dharam Tej’s next family outing Prathi Roju Pandaage directed by Maruthi is in the last leg of shoot and the film too releases on December 20th. As of now, three films are heading for release which is not a healthy sign. Last year, Padi Padi Leche Manasu, Anthariksham and KGF released during Christmas and KGF was the only film that fared well.

Ravi Teja’s Disco Raja and Nithiin’s Bheeshma too have been announced for December 20th release but the makers as of now decided to stay away from the busy clash. Both these films may release in February 2020 as per the update. This year Christmas is all set for a huge clash in Tollywood and the final dates may be announced soon.

Offbeat Bollywood films failing to excite Telugu heroes?

0

Already the news got out that Nithin agreed to get into the shoes of Ayushman Khurrana, to play the role of a blind man in the Telugu remake of ‘Andhadhun’. Rendered without any usual elements, this role requires a lot of acting prowess to make audiences glued to the screens. And for such a brilliant performance, Ayushman has won ‘shared’ National Award as Best Actor.

Before falling in Nithin’s hands, this film was screened multiple times at many preview theatres in Hyderabad’s popular film studios as many heroes wanted to watch it before taking a final call. From the likes of Siddharth to Bellamkonda Suresh, many tried to lay their hands on this remake but felt such an offbeat film will not work out for them.

Not just Andhadhun, there are many other films like the very same Ayushman’s Badhaai Ho are lying with middle-agents who want to sell the remake rights to Telugu production houses. Though Naga Chaitanya has thought of remaking this movie earlier, somehow he dropped the idea. Back then, Venkatesh thought of starring in Piku’s Telugu version, but Suresh Babu is said to have scoffed the idea citing that the film won’t work with Telugu audiences.

Are offbeat films really not exciting these Telugu stars or they are not sure of commercial success at the box office is the question here. Such films, however, would increase the respect for those heroes who pick them.

Why ‘Largo Winch’ framework shies away to fit in?

0

Tollywood’s interest around director Jerome Salle’s French action thriller ‘Largo Winch’, which is actually based on a Belgian comic, refuses to die down. In the end, however, the local filmmakers are only becoming a black sheep as they try to forcibly imitate that film’s story with their own creative ideas.

First, we have Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavasi and now there is Prabhas’ Saaho, which happen to be blatant copies of Largo Winch. The owner of a big company dies, and a secret son emerges, only to take over the company from the bad people. While Trivikram made his protagonist nature-loving guy who takes control of the company, Sujeeth made him a beast who is trying to take over a crime world.

No matter how hard our filmmakers tried, both these films failed to gain success at the box office. On that note, Largo Winch itself is not a huge box office success as the film made only $30 million while $25 million was spent on production and publicity. Ripping off this story unashamedly, Trivikram and Sujeeth thought of filling it with a ‘secret ingredient’, which only burnt the hands of producers ultimately.

All in all, 500 crores of investment got wasted on the same Largo Winch story in a short gap as both Agnyaathavasi and Saaho tried to weigh in more style than substance while making the modifications. Both Abhishikt Bhargav and Siddharth Nandan Saaho craved to become better cousins of Largo Winch, but all three of them are lacklustre heroes that couldn’t help luck shine on the movie.

In case if you are asking why ‘Largo Winch’ framework shies away to fit in, themes like raising a secret son, hiding paper-based shares (a BlackBox in Saaho’s case), too many villains are something that is tried and tested in our films countless times. That drives us to the fact that there will be no basic excitement for such stories.

Saaho- A small step for Prabhas, big leap for Tollywood

In a day, the big budgeted action bonanza Saaho featuring Prabhas will be seen on the silver screen, which will be a festival of sorts for Telugu audiences. As the film is also releasing big time across India in many languages, the Telugu film industry is waiting with bated breath for the result for many other reasons.

The success of Saaho is so important not from a business and investment perspective alone, but also for a sparkling future of Telugu cinema. If at all, Saaho turns superior blockbuster, more and more Bollywood producers will be interested in invest huge bucks in the films of Telugu directors and producers. There will be a crossover of actors (which is happening already), technicians, and all other talents. Market potential and talent pool of Telugu films will be expanded big time.

Though Baahubali series has opened doors for Telugu movies in Northern parts of the country, the true commercial success will be attained only if Saaho seals the win with a superior victory. There are those who believe that the sheer success of Baahubali is due to divine luck and such people will love to say success depends on craftsmanship and the art of storytelling in case if Saaho proves the mettle. That will also give a boost to Sye Raa’s presence as well, as Saaho’s success wins respect for Telugu films and filmmakers forever.

If we look at this film from Prabhas’ perspective, for the craze he amassed with Baahubali, Saaho will be another small step for him. Because even a dozen of his next films will run in Bollywood for the rage that engulfed him after the success of his first magnum opus. But for Tollywood, Saaho’s success will be a giant leap, in terms of market, numbers and respect.

Evolution of Sports Backdrop Films in Tollywood

0

The sports films genre is one of the most challenging subjects for filmmakers to choose and execute. While some sports films like Ashwani dedicated themselves to the legendary sports athletes, there are other films which had sports as a strong backdrop in the midst of the main storyline. We have often seen the hero being a sports star or just try out a sport such as Mahesh Babu in Okkadu and Venkatesh in Vasantham. Natural Star Nani showcased himself as a kabaddi player in Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu which was much appreciated as well.

However, films based on sports have evolved much impressively with years to come. The sports were no longer seen as just a glamorous profession but also as a place which has a lot of challenges. Indraganti Mohana Krishna made Golkonda High School which emphasized on the importance of physical education in schools. Sumanth has excelled in the role of a cricket coach which inspired much of the audience. Prakash Raj’s Dhoni also revolved much around Cricket and how a father realizes his son (Akash Puri)’s passion towards the sport. Weaving family values over a sport was quite much appreciated by the Telugu audience.

But off late, much of the movies are appreciating this trend once again and also bringing in female leads to play in the role of a sportsperson. Interestingly, the three films this year- namely Majili, Jersey and now Dear Comrade revolve around Cricket. The filmmakers are also breaking stereotypes by showcasing women playing a gentleman sport like Cricket. It was nice to watch Rashmika Mandanna strike sixes and boundaries in Vijay Deverakonda’s latest release Dear Comrade!

The lane down from now should be much more films on not just Cricket but also on other sports which need the attention of the majority of the audience.
