Best Tollywood films of 2023

It is a mixed bag for Telugu cinema in 2023. Several most awaited films ended up as duds while there are a bunch of surprise hits of the year. Here are the list of best films including money spinners at the Tollywood box-office for 2023:

January: Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veerasimha Reddy ended up as money spinners because of the star cast and the Sankranthi holiday season. Both these films were produced by Mythri Movie Makers.

February: Dhanush’s bilingual Sir ended up as a super hit and the film made huge money. Venky Atluri directed this social drama. All other releases failed.

March: Dil Raju backed a small film titled Balagam and the film is a surprise hit of the year. Apart from minting money, Balagam also won numerous awards. Nani tested his luck with Dasara and the film too made good money. His transformation was well appreciated.

April: Virupaksha marked the right comeback for Sai Dharam Tej and the mystic thriller is the best film of summer season. No other film impressed the audience.

May: Unfortunately, all the May releases failed badly and the entire summer season got wasted.

June: Sree Vishnu’s Samajavaragamana is one more surprise hit of the year and the family crowds rushed to theatres to watch this comic entertainer.

July: Baby is a sensational hit and the film is also named as a cult classic. Anand Devarakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya emerged as stars with this Sai Rajesh directorial.

August: All the new releases fell flat and ended up as huge disappointments.

September: Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty is one more surprise hit of the year. Naveen Polishetty and Anushka played the lead roles in this breezy romantic drama.

October: MAD is one more small film that made decent money in theatres. Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari made good money during the Dasara season and it impressed the family audience. Vijay’s Leo made big money as per the financials involved.

November: Keeda Cola was loved by the multiplex audience and youth. Mangalavaram was one among the releases.

December: Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal is a super hit and it opened on a strong note in Telugu states. Nani’s Hi Nanna received appreciation for the emotional content. Prabhas’ Salaar released today and it opened on a strong note.

AP Distributors tensed of Megastar’s comments

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Bhola Shankar is heading for release on August 11th across the globe. Few days before the release of the film, Chiranjeevi took a dig on AP government. He said that the government should focus on governance instead of staying focused on the remunerations of the stars. His comments went viral in no time and several leaders of AP responded to the comments. The makers of Bhola Shankar applied for special shows and price hikes in Andhra Pradesh.

The AP distributors are worried if the government grants permission at this time after Megastar’s comments. The GO was expected to be out yesterday but there is no update. The advance sales for the film are yet to be opened as there is a confusion about the price hike. The advance bookings are open in Telangana and other territories. For now, there is a tensed atmosphere in AP. Bhola Shankar is the remake of Vedhalam and it is directed by Meher Ramesh. AK Entertainments are the producers.

Tollywood 2023 Half-yearly Report

Half of 2023 is already done and Tollywood rarely had super hits. With not a single big film releasing in summer, the best season was utterly wasted. The exhibitors struggled badly because of the flops which are high in number this year. Veteran actors Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna had a clash for Sankranthi and both the films ended up as money spinners. Waltair Veerayya was a super hit. Dhanush’s Sir raked huge money in Telugu and Tamil languages. Nani’s pan-Indian attempt Dasara made good money in Nizam and it was an average grosser in Andhra Pradesh. The film failed badly in all the other languages.

Dil Raju’s small film Balagam was a surprising hit of this year. Sai Dharam Tej’s Virupaksha is the only hit for Telugu cinema in this summer. The film ended up as the biggest hit in the actor’s career and it marked a perfect comeback for Tej. All the other summer releases fell flat. Among the dubbed films, Bichagadu 2 brought good profits for the buyers.

Films like Amigos, Das Ka Dhamki, Ranga Maarthaanda, Ravanasura, Meter, Shaakuntalam, Agent, Ramabanam, Ugram, Custody, Anni Manchi Sakunamule, Adipurush and others failed to live up the expectations among the Telugu releases this year.

Waltair Veerayya has ended its run worldwide with a distributor share of 133.75 Cr (122.2 Cr excluding GST). The film has beaten Sarileru Neekevvarru to emerge sixth highest film of all time. After Sankranthi 2020 releases which was just pre covid , the film has the best run in theatres with direct run (min 3 shows in same theatre from day1 to day50) for 50 days in 70 centres. Best run for the film came in Uttarandhra where it in All Time Top 4 behind RRR, BB2 & Alvp.

The film has surpassed Sarileru Neekevvaru now to emerge as the sixth biggest Telugu earner. It is the second biggest earner for Chiranjeevi behind Sye Raa.

2023 starts with a Bang for Telugu Cinema

2022 was a mixed bag for Telugu cinema and all eyes are focused on the veteran actors Megastar Chiranjeevi and Nandamuri Balakrishna. Their films Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy had to clash during the Sankranthi season. Both these films were made on big budgets and they released in a gap of a day. Both these films ended up as money spinners while Waltair Veerayya was a clear winner and registered several records all over. Both these films brought handsome profits for the distributors and the producers. Vijay’s Tamil film Vaarasudu and Ajith’s Thegimpu could not stand before the wave of Telugu biggies and they reported low numbers.

Sudheer Babu’s HUNT released during the Republic Day weekend and the film was badly rejected by the audience. Shah Rukh Khan’s film Pathaan opened on a strong note in the Telugu states and reported good numbers over the weekend. 2023 January started with a bang for Telugu cinema. There are several films lined up for release in February and 2023 has a list of biggies and all the young actors will test their luck this year.

It is a clean Blockbuster for Chiranjeevi after Khaidi No.150 with huge profits for all distributors.

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya has emerged as a massive blockbuster and is still going strong even in its third week. The team celebrated the success at a grand event in Warangal. Mega Powerstar Ram Charan is the Chief Guest.

Speaking at the event, Chiranjeevi said, “I know Waltair Veerayya would become a blockbuster but didn’t expect it to become non-SSR hit. Audience should get the credit for it. The movie is inching towards 250 Crore gross. I was shown in my vintage mode and audience are reminded of my old classics. I became a star with Khaidi in 1983 and Bobby became a star director with Waltair Veerayya in 2023. He made the movie on a reasonable budget and that is the first reason for success. Mythri Movie Makers are very passionate and uncompromising producers. Devi gave wonderful music. I saw Pawan Kalyan in Ravi Teja in the death episode. That’s how the emotion looked very real”.

Ram Charan, the Chief Guest of the event told, “The movie released when I was in the US and I can not wait to come here and watch the film. Nanna is appearing like my brother in the movie. I came here as one of the fans. I enjoyed seeing Ravi Teja play a serious character. I felt it was not enough. Thus, I watched his Dhamaka on Netflix. Devi gave 3 fantastic songs and mainreason for the film success. Mythri Movie Makers gave biggest hits to all heroes including myself with Rangasthalam. A few producers should learn from them”.

Ravi Teja gives a boost to his Makers

After delivering back-to-back duds, Ravi Teja is back with a bang with Dhamaka. The film opened with mixed reviews but the film performed well all over and raked massive money in theatres. The producers too made handsome profits. Then came Waltair Veerayya and Ravi Teja had a prominent role in this Chiranjeevi starrer. Ravi Teja’s role in the second half is an asset for the film and Waltair Veerayya is a clear winner among the Sankranthi releases. Ravi Teja is done with the shoots of Ravanasura and Tiger Nageswara Rao.

The makers of both these projects got enough boost after Ravi Teja delivered back-to-back hits. The business deals of these films will be closed in the coming weeks. Ravi Teja is not in a mood to work with star directors and some of his films struggled for the needed buzz. With Ravi Teja back to the success streak, his upcoming films will be sold out irrespective of the results. Ravi Teja is currently shooting for Eagle in the direction of Karthik Ghattamaneni and the film releases this year. He is in talks for three new projects and they will be announced soon.

Blockbuster weekend for Waltair Veerayya

Megastar Chiranjeevi scored a solid hit with Waltair Veerayya keeping an end to all the rumors. The film dominated the Sankranthi box-office all over and the film minted massive money. Waltair Veerayya had an exceptional second weekend and dominated all the films. Screens are added on Saturday and Sunday across the Telugu states and the film is racing towards the biggest hit in the career of Megastar Chiranjeevi. Waltair Veerayya is directed by Bobby Kolli and is produced by Mythri Movie Makers. Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy had an average second weekend at the Tollywood box-office.

After having a strong first week, the numbers dropped down but the collections are good on Saturday and Sunday. Gopichand Malineni directed Veera Simha Reddy. Vijay’s Vaarasudu and Ajith’s Thegimpu had a below-average to poor second weekend across the Telugu states. With no new releases on Friday, Waltair Veerayya clearly dominated the show.

It is always common for any hero to have a big break in their entire professional career. But when it comes to Megastar Chiranjeevi, surprisingly it took more than two decades to get him commercial success through a straight film after the blockbuster Indra (2002).

Tagore, Shandar Dada MBBS and Khaidi No 150 were on the superhit list but turned out to be remake films. Chiranjeevi’s straight films after Indra are Stalin, Sye Raa and Acharya. They ended up as disappointments at the box office. Even a few remakes like Shankardada Zindabad and God Father did not bring revenues to the makers.

Bobby Kolli’s Waltair Veerayya has broken the jinx and with this Chiranjeevi is left absolutely delighted and started planning for more straight films. His next outing will be Bholaa Shankar in Meher Ramesh’s direction. The film is the remake of Tamil super hit film Vedhalam.

Waltair Veeraya has another excellent day as the film has collected more than 12.50 Cr on its First Monday. 4 days total worldwide share of the film now stands at 73.6 Cr. Benefiting from the festivities the film was on rampage mode in both the Telugu States though Nizam has dropped a little due to the partial holiday in Hyderabad City.

Veera Simha Reddy has another good day at the box office as the film has collected a distributor share of more than 6.5 Cr. 5 days total worldwide share of the film now stands at 57.1 Cr. The film is doing decent in AP but underperforming big time in Nizam Area. The crucial test for the film begins tomorrow, especially in the Nizam area.

Megastar responds about targeting Koratala Siva

Megastar Chiranjeevi tasted the biggest-ever debacle with Acharya. He indirectly made some harsh comments against Koratala Siva and there are debates about the same on social media from the past few months. During the promotions of Waltair Veerayya, Megastar made comments about the working style of directors. He heaped praises on Bobby for his work. During a recent interview, Chiranjeevi responded about his previous comments. He clarified that he has not targeted Koratala Siva and his remarks had nothing to do with Koratala’s work.

“It was my general opinion about adopting the working style of Hollywood for our directors. I had no intention to target Koratala Siva and it was presented like that. Some of the Bollywood directors have adopted this style and I wish it would be soon seen in Telugu” told Megastar. Chiranjeevi turned out to be a target for NTR fans and he was trolled on Twitter. Megastar responded about targeting Koratala Siva. Koratala will work with NTR in his next and the pre-production work reached the final stages. The shoot of the film kick-starts in February and this pan-Indian film releases during summer 2024.

Sankranthi releases both Waltair Veerayya & Veera Simha Reddy had a very good weekend at the box-office. The films have collected 60.7 Cr & 50.5 Cr Worldwide shares respectively.

Waltair Veerayya is having an excellent run and dominating the remaining releases in all areas. The film will get benefited from the festival period at least for another 2 days and is expected to achieve breakeven status by the end of the first week or in the second weekend.

Veera Simha Reddy after an excellent opening day dropped on the second day but showed good gains over the weekend. The problem with the film is it still has lots of room to hit the capacity but that ain’t happening. It will get befitted by the festival period for two more days and then all will come down to how it will hold from there.

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s recent offering Waltair Veerayya is a blockbuster at the box-office. The film is doing exceptional business all over. Bobby Kolli is the director of this mass entertainer.
