After Puri Jagannadh and Charmme appeared before the officials of the Enforcement Directorate, Vijay Deverakonda, the lead actor of Liger has been questioned by the ED officials. He was questioned for 12 hours and Vijay Deverakonda interacted with the media after completing the investigation. “Popularity also brings side effects. This is one among them. It is an experience and I did my duty when I was called. I answered all the questions. I was not asked to come for the questioning again” told Vijay Deverakonda.

The actor is on a break and he will soon resume the shoot of Kushi directed by Shiva Nirvana. The officials of the Enforcement Directorate have been investigating the foreign funds for the film Liger. ‘Liger’ money laundering probe: Vijay Devarakonda appears before ED

0

Popular Tollywood actor Vijay Devarakonda on Wednesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the investigation relating to sourcing of funds for his recent film ‘Liger’.

The actor appeared before ED officials at the agency’s regional office in Hyderabad. The central agency is investigating the alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

As per sources, Vijay Devarakonda is being questioned about sources of funding for the movie, his remuneration and payments made to other actors including American boxer Mike Tyson.

The ED officials had grilled film director Puri Jagannadh and actor-turned-producer Charmme Kaur on November 17.

They were questioned about the source of investment for Hindi-Telugu movie ‘Liger’ which was released in August this year.

Mike Tyson also played an extended cameo in the movie, reported to have been produced with a budget of about Rs 125 crore.

Starring Vijaya Devarakonda and Ananya Panday in the lead, the film had mega shoots in Las Vegas. It, however, bombed at the box-office.

The ED took up the investigation after Congress leader Bakka Judson lodged a complaint about the investment into the movie through dubious routes.

Bakka Judson had complained that even politicians had invested money in Liger. He claimed that the investors found it the easiest way of turning their black money into white.

The ED officials are reported to have questioned the director and producer about the allegations that crores of rupees were invested into the making of the movie from foreign countries allegedly in violation of FEMA.

The investigating agency suspects that several companies had transferred funds to the accounts of the filmmakers. They were asked to provide details of those who had remitted the money and how the payments were made to foreign actors including Mike Tyson and technical crew.

Puri and Charmme questioned about Foreign Funds

0

Sensational director Puri Jagannadh has been facing the heat of Liger and he was badly criticized after the film’s release. He was back in news recently after the distributors threatened him. His voice tape went viral in no time and Puri even issued an official statement about the same. The top director is now drilled by the investigation agency Enforcement Directorate. Puri and Charmme were questioned for 11 hours in Hyderabad yesterday and they are asked to be available for the investigation. The questioning went around the foreign funds and the investments made in the film.

American boxer Mike Tyson was paid a bomb for the film and the officials questioned about how Puri managed to pool international funds and he was questioned about the transactions. For now, Puri is yet to repay to his buyers and the officials are even investigating about the recent transactions of Puri Jagannadh and Charmme. There are strong speculations that Puri received investments from politicians. The investigation in this case will take some more time and no conclusions are made. The lead actor Vijay Deverakonda who was promised profits in the film was not paid much after the release of Liger.

More Troubles for Puri Jagannadh

Sensational director Puri Jagannadh delivered a number of super hits along with massive debacles. Though he lost or earned his own money, he was never into a financial mess or legal hurdles. For the first time, things turned uglier and there are lot of people who are being suffered because of the legal mess and the financial delays of Liger. The film was released on an advance basis and it was Chadalavada Srinivasa Rao (Film Producer), Shobhan (Financier), Warangal Srinu (Distributor) handled the Telugu business. They acquired advances from the distributors and exhibitors with the promise of full refund and paid to Puri Jagannadh.

Strict agreements are made that the payments will be made within 50 days if the amounts are not recovered upon the promise of Puri. With a huge delay in the recovery and a severe cash crunch in the market, the distributors and exhibitors mounted pressure on Puri Jagannadh to repay the amounts. Puri should have requested some more time but he was not available to address the issue. He was absent in Hyderabad and he is busy in Mumbai which made the situation worse. Puri is yet to receive the payments through the non-theatrical deals and he is ready to repay the amounts.

He should have managed to pool some of the funds as he already made profits through Liger. If he would have repaid a portion of the amount and requested more time from the distributors by meeting them in person, the things would not have turned worse or ugly. Now, the financial settlements of Liger turned out to be a discussion across the Tollywood circles. This would sure turn out to be a dent for Puri Jagannadh in the future for his films. He will have to release his films on his own in the future if they do not feature stars. Else, he should sell off the rights before release which may not happen considering the pathetic performance of Liger.

Its hight time for Puri Jagannadh to settle the issue at the earliest. Else the problems would mount up badly.

Fact Check: Liger Financial Settlements

1

An audio byte of Puri Jagannadh got leaked last evening which is circulated widely. Puri promised to pay back the losses of Liger and there was a delay in the settlements as Puri Jagannadh is yet to receive the payments for the non-theatrical rights of the film. The digital deals are closed well in advance but the final payments are yet to reach Puri. The exhibitors have lost their cool and they decided to protest. The distributors are promised to be paid back in 50 days and the deadline got completed. Financier Shoban is responsible to settle the issue with Puri Jagannadh and repay back to the distributors.

Puri feels that he is blackmailed after the exhibitors threatened of protesting before his office. Puri is not answerable to the exhibitors. Some of the distributors paid huge advances and they released the film on an advance basis. They are not responsible for the losses and it is the responsibility of Puri Jagannadh to pay back on time. It is good if the issue gets closed at the earliest before it turns out to be a news and discussion for everyone. Puri Jagannadh is currently in Mumbai and he is working on his next film. For now, there is no clarity about his next film. The lead actor would be finalized once the final script is locked.

Puri Jagannadh facing the heat of Liger

1

Liger is one of the biggest ever debacles of the year. The film’s director Puri Jagannadh promised to return back and compensate for the losses. The exhibitors and distributors have been waiting for Puri but the dues are yet to be settled. A bunch of exhibitors decided to protest before the office of Puri Jagannadh. The sensational director says that he is ready to face the heat if the protests are done. Keeping the profit and loss statement aside, it is better to settle the issue before things turn ugly.

Some of the territories are released on an advance basis and Puri has to repay the losses in the Telugu states. The top director has never got a bad remark about financial settlements and he stands first to repay the losses. Puri is currently in Mumbai and he is expected to meet the financiers soon and repay the amounts. Liger featured Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Pandey, Mike Tyson and Ramya Krishna in the lead roles. Puri Connects produced Liger which was a pan-Indian attempt.

Analysis: Producers Vs Distributors in Tollywood

0

There was a drastic change in the business of films after the pandemic. The non-theatrical deals have increased for every established actor of Telugu cinema irrespective of their success streak. The producers have made huge money through the biggies. Several hit films like Pushpa: The Rise, RRR and Sarkaru Vaari Paata left the distributors in losses though they are declared as hits. This is because of the huge asking price from the producers. For films like Radhe Shyam, Acharya, Ghani, Thank You, The Warrior, Ramarao On Duty and Liger, the distributors lost big amounts. The distributors are no longer interested to make non-refundable payments for any film in the future. Most of the producers did not keep their promises because of which the distributors took this drastic step. There is a huge gap between the producers and distributors financially. Here are some of the incidents that took place in the recent months:

Dil Raju who is a distributor-friendly producer too did not keep his promise. He asked his buyers to pay hefty amounts for F3 and the buyers lost in some of the areas. Dil Raju did not repay the losses and he kept calm about the same. It is then his distributors revealed that they would pay nothing for Thank You as the film carried low buzz. After F2, all his films Iddari Lokam Okate, Jaanu, Rowdy Boys ended up as flops and left the buyers in huge losses. Dil Raju missed several deadlines in the past.

Mythri Movie Makers are producing several biggies. After Uppena, films like Pushpa: The Rise, Sarkaru Vaari Paata, Ante Sundaraniki and Happy Birthday released. All these films left the buyers in huge losses. Mythri promised to repay the losses for Pushpa: The Rise but they never compensated for the same. They promised to adjust the same in Sarkaru Vaari Paata but it did not happen. Instead, Ante Sundaraniki increased the losses for the buyers. All the distributors informed the production house that they would release their films on an advance basis in the future and are not ready to take a risk.

Acharya is the biggest flop of Telugu cinema. Koratala Siva who is responsible for the business is yet to compensate the buyers after months. They are just left in waiting mode for the refunds. This is very pathetic.

Sudhakar Cherukuri of SLV Cinemas delivered four flops like Padi Padi Leche Manasu, Virata Parvam, Aadavallu Meeku Joharlu, Ramarao On Duty. His last two films Virata Parvam and Ramarao On Duty were released on an advance basis. He needs to repay huge amounts to his buyers. He now sold out the theatrical rights of Nani’s Dasara for a new buyer as a package. All his distributors are furious against the young producer for his move. He promised to compensate for the same but no one knows when it would happen.

Liger is a huge loss for everyone involved. The distributors are left in shock and Puri Jagannadh is in talks for the compensation.

After a series of incidents, there is a considerable gap between the Producers and Distributors of Telugu cinema. They are now ready to release any film on an advance basis and are not ready to release them on NRA system. Films like Bimbisara, Sita Ramam and Karthikeya 2 which are released on an advance basis left everyone in profit. This would be implemented for every film in the future.

Liger issue heading for a Legal Tussle

0

Liger is the biggest disaster of Indian cinema this year. The distributors lost big amounts in Telugu states and they are demanding a refund as the film is released on an advance basis in most of the territories. After the distributors and the financiers approached Charmme for the same, there was no response from them. A close insider told that Puri Jagannadh and Charmme made handsome profits before the release. They are now denying it saying that they have lost a huge amount on the film.

The distributors are now in plans to meet tomorrow and approach Puri Jagannadh to compensate for the same. If the producers deny repaying for their losses, they are keen to approach the Film Chamber. Puri promised to repay the advances after the film ended up as a dud. But things changed in the recent week. We have to see if Puri and Charmme will solve the issue or if it heads for a legal tussle.

Liger Issue: Facts about Vijay Deverakonda’s Remuneration

Vijay Deverakonda spent close to three years on Liger and the film has been declared as a dud. During the initial discussions, Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Deverakonda decided to take out mininum remuneration for the film for their expenses and decided to hold a lion’s share in the profits to make big money. Puri Jagannadh made close to Rs 50 crore profits before the release. Karan Johar who joined the team was asked to promote the film and share the profits in the Hindi theatrical release. He never invested a penny but helped the film to get a wide release in North India.

There are speculations that Vijay Deverakonda returned back Rs 6 crores from his remuneration for Liger to compensate the losses of the distributors. There is no truth in the news. Vijay Deverakonda has taken Rs 3 crores as remuneration for the film. He is expected to share the profits after the theatrical business closes. Puri Jagannadh is back to Hyderabad and he is meeting the distributors and financiers who inked deals with him. Puri has to refund close to Rs 40 crores from the profits made. The other expenses and the promotional costs will have to be calculated. Considering all these, Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh will make nothing from Liger. It is a wasted effort of three years for the duo who dreamt big on a film.

Actress, ‘Liger’ co-producer Charmme Kaur takes a break from social media

0

Actress Charmme Kaur, who is also one of the producers of the just released Telugu film ‘Liger’, on Sunday announced that she was taking a break from social media.

Taking to Twitter, Charmme Kaur said, “Chill guys! Just taking a break (from social media) @PuriConnects will bounce back. Bigger and Better… Until then, live and let live.”

Charmme’s decision to take a break from social media comes at a time when ‘Liger’, the film she produced along with Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh, Apoorva Mehta and Hiroo Yash Johar, has fared badly at the box office.

The film, which featured Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Pandey in the lead, was made on a lavish scale and was even promoted as boxing legend Mike Tyson’s first Indian film.

Rumours doing the rounds in the industry suggest that Liger’s poor performance might have a telling impact on the next project of director Puri Jagannadh with actor Vijay Deverakonda as well.

If the rumours are to be believed, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, the next pan-Indian film that director Puri Jagannadh had planned to make with Vijay Deverakonda in the lead, has been shelved. There has been no official announcement, though, about it.

Puri Jagannadh’s crucial meeting on Liger

0

Sensational director Puri Jagannadh is trolled and criticized like never before in his career. His recent offering Liger is a massive dud and the distributors lost big amounts on the film. Puri and Vijay expected that the film would rake massive numbers in its final run. With the asking stakes high, some of the buyers backed out. Warangal Srinu bought the film for Nizam region and he is staring at huge losses. Some of the regions in Andhra are released on an advance basis. Puri Jagannadh will have to compensate and repay the advances for the buyers.

Dil Raju and NV Prasad already met Puri Jagannadh and informed him about the same. Puri Jagannadh will meet the buyers next week and will refund the lost amount for some of the regions where the film was released on an advance basis. The film’s financiers Shobhan and others too kept hold of some of the regions and released the film on an advance basis. Puri and his team have pocketed close to Rs 60 crores and they will have to shell out the majority of this amount to compensate for the losses of Liger. The film would not be a loss venture for Puri Jagannadh and Charmme but they will have to repay back to the buyers from the profits.

Liger team shells out a Whopping pay for Mike Tyson

1

Liger turned out to be a huge embarrassment for Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh. The film is declared as one of the biggest disasters of Indian cinema. American boxing champion Mike Tyson played a crisp role in the film. Puri was badly trolled for misusing Mike Tyson and there are debates about the silly climax. The makers of Liger paid a whopping Rs 25 crores for the cameo appearance of Mike Tyson. This is huge considering his screen presence and the prominence of his role.

Frankly speaking, Mike Tyson’s presence did not bring any extra mileage for the project. There are talks that Vijay Deverakonda and Karan Johar were against the idea of roping in Mike Tyson but Puri Jagannadh convinced them and he paid a whopping Rs 25 crores for Tyson. Liger is a wasted opportunity and the film is declared as a disaster in all the released languages. Puri Jagannadh and Karan Johar bankrolled Liger, a sports drama that had Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Pandey and Ramya Krishna in the lead roles.

Puri Jagannadh to compensate for Liger Losses

1

Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh’s Liger is heading towards one of the biggest disasters of Indian cinema. The weekend too could not help the film because of the poor word of mouth. The distributors are staring at huge losses. The film is released on an advance basis in most of the territories. Puri Jagannadh handled the theatrical deals and the makers made handsome profits before the release. Dil Raju distributed the film in Vizag region and he is losing more than Rs 4 crores through Liger. Dil Raju and NV Prasad recently met Puri Jagannadh and informed the situation to the director.

All the distributors are in plan to meet Puri Jagannadh very soon to compensate for their losses. Financiers Chadalavada Srinivas Rao along with Shobhan handled the Andhra theatrical business while Warangal Srinu acquired the Nizam rights of Liger. Puri Jagannadh promised to pay back the losses to the distributors. A meeting about this is planned this week. Puri will have to cut down the profits and return back the amount to the distributors. Liger had Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Pandey in the lead roles.

Box-Office: Past releases dominate Liger

0

Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger is the biggest release of the season for Indian cinema. The film had a pan-Indian release on Thursday and the poor word of mouth had a huge impact on the box-office numbers. The weekend numbers are pathetic and the film failed to report decent footfalls. In the Telugu states, past releases Karthikeya 2 and Sita Ramam had one more fantastic weekend. The films ran with packed houses and dominated the new release Liger.

Sita Ramam was top class in the cities and Karthikeya 2 dominated in all the centres. Liger turned out to be a huge embarrassment for the whole team. The film also underperformed in North India. For the first time, Puri Jagannadh was badly trolled for his poor writing and direction. Though Vijay Deverakonda’s efforts were appreciated, he is targeted because of the poor script selection. Karthikeya 2 and Sita Ramam had a fantastic weekend at the box-office. Kalyanram’s Bimbisara was decent over the weekend.

Liger is a lesson for Many Reasons

Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh teamed up for the first time and the film Liger is a pan-Indian attempt. Apart from Tollywood, several Bollywood filmmakers were eager about the film to see the real stamina of Vijay Deverakonda. The actor enjoys a terrific fan base across social media and he dethroned several Superstars in no time and emerged as the Most Desirable Man. Liger received a poor response from the audience and the collections dropped big on its second day. The film is a lesson for Indian cinema for many reasons:

Liger is the best example of overhyping a product. Vijay Deverakonda spoke too much during the promotions. His remark of the film starting from Rs 200 crores made him the best target for the trolls. He was over confident on the film and during several occasions, Vijay said that they are ready to create a sensation across the nation with Liger. Films like Sita Ramam and Karthikeya 2 released with minimum buzz and they are declared as blockbusters. If the team of Liger would have maintained low hype, the result would have been different and not disappointing like now.

Pan-Indian release doesn’t mean having known faces of the country. If the film has the right content, it would cater to wider sections. Actors like Ananya Pandey, Ronit Roy are not known for the Tollywood audience. Liger is a blunder casting-wise. The dubbing work was poor and was not taken care of. The lip sync of the most of the actors was not matching.

Ananya Pandey’s work is badly trolled all over. Mrunal Thakur is not a known face for the Tollywood audience. But her portrayal as Sita in Sita Ramam is winning accolades. The actress is now owned by the Telugu audience for her exceptional work. Finding the right actor is the need of the hour. Bollywood actresses would never add buzz for a film if the content is not appealing.

The music of Liger too is a misfire. The songs failed to impress the audience of Bollywood and Tollywood.

Liger is completely presented like a Hindi film and is shot in Mumbai. Telugu audience are left in shock for completely depending on the Bollywood template and style.

Puri Jagannadh picked up a very ordinary script for Liger. His lazy writing ruined the film completely. He is trolled like never before. Ever the die-hard fans of Puri’s work across the industry circles are now discussing about his future.

The film’s content should speak and not the actors. Vijay Deverakonda should promote the film’s content instead of making unusual statements. These damaged Liger big time.

Unfortunately, Liger is heading towards the biggest disaster of Indian cinema.
