US box office : Majili holds well, set to surpass half million mark

Akkineni Naga Chaitanya’s Friday release Majili is holding well at the US box office in the first weekend after taking a decent start on Thursday premiers. The emotional drama directed by Siva Nirvana is all set to surpass the half million dollar mark by the end of Saturday.

Majili opened with $ 163K from Thursday premiers and collected a decent $ 148K on Friday to go past the $ 300K mark. On Saturday, the film is likely to collect more than $ 200K to take the total part half million dollars. Positive word of mouth and encouraging reviews are helping the film bigtime. The impressive performances of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha are standout in Majili and worked well despite some predictable screenplay.

After back to back debacles, Naga Chaitanya finally bagged a decent hit with Majili. Shine Screens has produced this film.

Akkineni Naga Chaitanya is going through a tough phase as all his recent outings left no trace at box office. He has pinned all hopes on his new release romantic entertainer Majili which has Samantha as the female lead. Siva Nirvana of “Ninnu Kori” fame is the director

Story:

Purna (Chaitanya) is a middle-class boy from Vizag who wants to be a cricketer. Anshu( Divyansha ) is a north Indian girl , daughter of aVizag naval officer. Purna and Anshu loves each other but destiny separates them and Sravani(Samantha ) enters into the life of Purna . Unable to forget his first love, Purna lives in memories of Anshu though married to Sravani. Rest of the film is how the marital life of Purna, Sravani shapes up!

Analysis:

‘Majili’ is a sensible film that has been made with honesty and nativity. This film is a slice of a youngster’s life. The life phases of Purna ( Naga Chaitanya) such as pursuing his passion of becoming cricketer, falling in love with a girl, missing the girl and marrying another girl etc. have been showcased with an emotional content.First half deals with hanging out with friends, practising in cricket matches and Love with Anshu. Second half is about the marital life with Sravani (Samantha).

Director Shiva Nirvana shows his command over writing heart touching dialogues and in writing good scenes to showcase the chemistry between Anshu and Purna. While in most of the film he didn’t go over the top, but the key twist that happens in Dehradun and subsequent scenes are illogical or too cinematic. Though abrupt, climax is fine with impressive performances of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha. But pre- climax 30 minutes are dragged. Little crisper editing would have helped in pace.
The pure friendship, deceit friendships, General misimpression amongst middle class youth about north Indian girls, many other scenes are impressively handled by the director. Gopi Sundar’s music is just okay !

Performances:

Naga Chaitanya got his career best author backed role as ‘ Purna ‘, acted superb too ! Samantha steals the show with her stellar performance in 2nd half as ‘ Sravani’ .New girl Divyansha is adequate. Posani Krishna murali, Rao Ramesh got tailor made roles for them.

Positives:

  • Engaging and family oriented story
  • Honest storytelling with good dialogues
  • Performances of lead couple
  • Pleasant songs
  • Good Climax
  • Thaman’s BG Score

Negatives:

  • Old school drama in last 30 minutes
  • Unconvincing twist in Dehradun
  • Slow pace at times

Verdict:

Majili is a Good film for family audience and a decent one time watch for Youth! USP of the film is in it’s story, while dialogues and performances are added assets. On flip side, slow paced narration at times doesn’t go well with a section of audience.

Hero Akkineni Naga Chaitanya said he did not suggest Samantha’s name for ‘Majili’ and it was completely director Shiva Nirvana’s call. But added both his and her’s characters are quite intense ones in the movie.

In fact Sam being part of ‘Majili’ has helped him a lot said Naga Chaitanya and also stated that she definitely dominates him in terms of performance. About director Shiva, Chay said he developed a good rapport with him as they worked on the script for seven months before the shoot commenced.

“To play such an emotional character, I surrendered myself to the director as I immensely loved the script and no major changes were made. It just took me to the process. I can’t judge my performance but it is the most honest film I’ve ever done,” replied Chay when asked about his character Poorna.

The Akkineni hero revealed his favourite scenes from the movie. “Post the first half, there is one particular scene with Posani garu and it’s a heated argument scene. The next is climax episode which is very crucial. I had complete confidence in the script and so I was able to deliver a pleasant performance. Have to see how audience will take it,” quipped Chaitanya.

Then he said did not work out much to show variations in playing two different roles as a 19 year old and then as a middle aged man. “I just went for a clean shave to look younger and to look old, I just had beard,” said Chay in a light-hearted manner.

Post marriage, working with Sam just gives him the comfort and the rest are as usual, replied Chay when asked working with Samantha.

‘Majili’ is releasing this Friday i.e, on April 5th.

Majili Streaming Rights Sold for Record Price

Naga Chaitanya and Samantha are teaming up for the first time post their marriage for a breezy romantic drama titled Majili. Shiva Nirvana is the director and the film releases on April 5th all over. The makers recently closed the satellite, digital and Hindi dubbing rights of the film. Gemini TV acquired the satellite rights for Rs 5 crores. Amazon Prime picked the digital streaming rights for Rs 3.5 crores.

The Hindi dubbing rights of Majili are sold for Rs 4 crores. All these rights in total fetched Rs 12.5 crores which is a good deal for the makers. Shine Screens are the producers. Naga Chaitanya plays a young cricketer in one of the roles in the film. Divyansha Kaushik is the other lead actress and Gopi Sunder is the music composer for Majili.
